65, Fred Thomas, MD

Dr. Fred Thomas passed away on August 14th. Dr. Thomas was a member of the Department of Medicine for over 40 years, working his entire career at the Ohio State University Medical Center. He served as Division Director for Gastroenterology for many years, first from 1974 to 1990, then again from 2001 to 2006.

Dr. Thomas received his BA from OSU in 1962, and his MD from OSU in 1965. Except for 2 years in the Air Force from 1971 to 1973, Dr. Thomas worked his entire career at Ohio State. Fred absolutely loved Ohio State and all it stood for. He was a true Buckeye. While many people often look for greener pastures, for Fred , the grass was always greener at Ohio State.

Dr. Thomas was known as an outstanding physician, widely acknowledged for his breadth of knowledge of gastroenterology as well as internal medicine in general. He published over 60 peer reviewed articles. Perhaps what Dr. Thomas is best remembered for is his teaching. He loved teaching at all levels, but truly relished working with and teaching Gastroenterology fellows. Despite being one of the elder statesmen in the division, his ability to connect with the youngest members of the division was an order of magnitude greater than everyone else's.

Dr. Thomas will truly be missed by the Gastroenterology Division, the Department of Medicine, and the Medical Center as a whole. He is survived by his wife, children, and grand children
