’50 Byron Briggs Stinson, MD (1921-2015) 

 

Byron Briggs Stinson, M.D., 94, of Clarksburg, Ohio passed away Sunday, July 26, 2015, at 3:19 p.m. at National Church Residences in Chillicothe where he had been residing since November 1, 2014.Dr. Stinson was born May 24, 1921, in New Holland, Ohio to McKinley and Anna Lee Briggs Stinson. He was a graduate of Lakewood (Ohio) High School and received his bachelor's degree, medical doctor degree and master of medical science from The Ohio State University. Following his internship at Mt. Carmel, he lived most of his life in the New Holland and Clarksburg communities, except for a brief period in 1951-52 when he lived in Albuquerque. He was a medical doctor and formerly had a medical practice in Clarksburg. He then became a psychiatrist and served on the faculty at The Ohio State University until his retirement in 1986. Following his retirement, he was a psychiatrist at the Scioto Paint Valley Mental Health Center until 2006.Dr. Stinson was a member of Alpha Omega Alpha medical honorary; was a World War II veteran of the United States Marine Corps and later was a colonel and flight surgeon in the Air Force Reserves. He was a member of the New Holland Post of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was an avid horseman and polo player. He established the Austin Dirty Shirts polo team; organized a cavalry unit during the Civil War Centennial and was invited and rode with the Mexican Cavalry. He also had numerous published articles. He married Eleanor Marie Manly on March 9, 1946. She preceded him in death on March 2, 2012. He was also preceded by a daughter, Bethany Stinson Stevenson; two daughters-in-law, Teresa Stinson and Cinda Stinson; a granddaughter, Katherine Stevenson; a brother, Dr. Dustin Stinson; a sister, Anne Jane Stinson and his daughter Melany's longtime companion, Trygve Lonnebotn. Dr. Stinson is survived by a daughter, Melany Stinson Newby of Columbus, Ohio; two sons, Richard B. Stinson of Washington Court House and Manly Stinson and his wife, Connie, of Frankfort; a son-in-law, Dr. John Stevenson of Reynoldsburg; seven grandchildren, Shannon West, David (Kori) Stevenson, Sarah (Kala) Radl, Brandt (Nicole) Stinson, Rachel (Steve) Greene, Byron R. (Kennedy Wagner) Stinson and Erica (Keith) Gehres; nine great grandchildren, Ella and Ava West, Katherine and John Thomas Stevenson, Audrey Grace, Stella Marie and Asher Byron Stinson, Fenrir Radl and Addison Gehres; a sister-in-law, Marilyn J. Stinson of Circleville; his former wife, Mary Ellen Asher Stinson Schwart; and other extended family members.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Byron, Anne and Dustin Stinson Family Scholarship Fund #482143, The Ohio State University Foundation, 1480 West Lane Avenue, Columbus, Ohio 43221.
