George J. Mallo, M.D., 85, died after a short illness September 10, 2015.
Born in Akron, he was a graduate of the University of Akron and Ohio State University Medical School. A U. S. Air Force Veteran, he was a lifelong member of St. George Antiochian Orthodox Church serving as president of the parish many times.
Dr. Mallo practiced medicine in the Akron area for nearly 40 years as an orthopedic surgeon, serving as chief of staff at City Hospital. His certifications, licensure and awards included the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery, Fellow (FACS) American College of Surgeons, and American College of Surgeons - ACS Member. He also served as a professor of Orthopedic Surgery at Northeast Ohio Medical University (NEOMED). He served as the University of Akron football team physician for a record 37 years.
Preceded in death by his first wife, Nancy; parents, Juanita and John Mallo; grandparents who helped raise him, Nacima and George Mallo; and sisters, Joanne Maj and Nancy Gershom; he is survived by his wife, Virginia; sons Jeffrey and Joseph (Laura); daughter, Jennifer; grandchildren, Brody, Monica, and Seth; sister, Dolores Elias; brothers-in-law, Richard Maj and Kenneth Gershom; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family.
