John L. Melvin, MD '60 is Honored Through the Creation of the Melvin Leadership Fund

It was with great excitement that The Ohio State University College of Medicine received notice of a very generous, yet anonymous, donation to honor a classmate from 1960, John L. Melvin, MD, MMSc. Dr. Melvin has accomplished a great deal throughout his career, and the impact he has had on the College of Medicine is undefinable.

The anonymous donor is creating the Melvin Leadership Fund and all donations to the Melvin Leadership Fund will be matched up to $50,000. The goal for the fund is to reach $100,000 to become Ohio Scholarship Challenge eligible. By becoming Ohio Scholarship Challenge eligible, the fund will award a qualifying student double the standard distribution amount for an endowed scholarship fund of this size.  That means the typical scholarship award for this fund could be approximately $8,400 instead of the usual estimated $4,200. Not only will this fund honor Dr. Melvin, but it will ensure that his name and impact are maintained at The Ohio State University in perpetuity.

Dr. Melvin currently serves as the Michie Professor and Chair of the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine, Jefferson College of Medicine at Thomas Jefferson University. He has presented more than 460 invited lectures throughout the world and published more than 215 papers, chapters, monographs, books, editorials and abstracts. Since 1971, Dr. Melvin has served as a member of more than 50 national and international expert advisory committees, including three of the Institute of Medicine and one of the National Research Council of the National Academy of Sciences.  He has also been the President or Chairman of twelve major national and international organizations. Since 2000, Dr. Melvin has also been active in developing rehabilitation medicine in China through providing clinical and research experiences for Chinese physicians and therapists at the affiliated clinical facilities of the Jefferson Medical College.

Dr. Melvin has received numerous honors and awards, including those from various clubs and organizations at The Ohio State University. These awards include the 1985 Alumni Achievement Award from The Ohio State University College of Medicine; Alumnus Inductee into Alpha Omega Alpha, The Ohio State University Gamma Chapter; 2009 Certificate of Appreciation from The Ohio State University College of Medicine; 2010 Outstanding Society Leader from The Ohio State University Alumni Association; and most recently the Ralph Davenport Mershon Award from The Ohio State University Alumni Association in 2014. These awards are evident of his tireless service to the College as a member of the Medical Alumni Society and Chair of the College of Medicine’s Campaign Committee for the current “But For Ohio State” Campaign.

The College is abundantly grateful to the anonymous donor giving us the occasion to recognize Dr. Melvin’s remarkable achievements.
