’70 C. Thomas “Tom” Armstrong, MD, 75, died July 18, 2016 in Newport Beach, California. After graduation from the Ohio State University College of Medicine, this Springfield, Ohio native completed an orthopedic surgery residency at Orange county Medical Center, now University of California, Irvine, and then joined Southern California Permanente Physicians Orthopedics at San Diego Kaiser for 10 years, before transferring to the Emergency Department for the remainder of his career. Dr. Armstrong served as Chief of the Emergency Department for five of those years. He taught CPR to younger physicians and heralded the close cooperative association of emergency response technicians with the emergency department. He served in the Army Reserves for 6 years as a Captain before his Honorable Discharge and was a Rotary member. Dr. Armstrong became a Fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians and was a member of multiple professional societies, serving on numerous committees. He retired from Kaiser as a partner in 2007 at age 65 but continued practicing with the group as a per diem until 2014. A celebration of his life was held July 30, 2016, in Newport Beach.
