Welcome from the Chair

logoDear Visitor:

Welcome to the Department of Biological Chemistry and Pharmacology in the School of Biomedical Sciences, College of Medicine within The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center!

It is my pleasure to announce that the Ohio State University Board of Trustees approved the creation of the Department of Biological Chemistry and Pharmacology (BCP) in June of 2015 through the merger of the Department of Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry and the Department of Pharmacology. The Department of Biological Chemistry and Pharmacology is dedicated to the discovery and dissemination of knowledge through research, education, and service in a uniquely collaborative environment.

The research priority of the Department is to better understand the fundamental mechanisms underlying complex diseases and develop novel diagnostic and therapeutic approaches to these diseases.  Faculty in the department are focused on neuromuscular diseases, such as Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA), Amyelotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) and Muscular Dystrophy, Alzheimer’s disease, Autism, drug addiction and cancer.  Faculty in our department utilize a wide-range of cutting edge technologies to basic mechanisms of RNA processing, epigenetics, DNA repair, ion channel function, gene expression, protein folding and aggregation, signal transduction, stem cell biology and developmental biology. Our faculty members are leaders in their fields, and our joint faculty members from other departments provide invaluable collaboration and collegiality.

The Department strives to integrate research and teaching to provide the most progressive and challenging environment for students and fellows in both the laboratory and classroom. PhD students in the Department of Biological Chemistry and Pharmacology primarily enter through The Ohio State Biochemistry Program (OSBP). The OSBP is a unique collaboration between our department and the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry in the College of Arts and Sciences, as it provides graduate level training that spans the entire spectrum of modern biochemistry.  In addition to OSBP, our students and faculty participate in several other integrated graduate programs at OSU like the Biomedical Sciences Graduate Program (BSGP), the Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology Program (MCDB)., the Biophysics Program and the Neuroscience Graduate Program.

In addition to research and education, our faculty participates in service that includes work at the local, national and international levels. Our faculty members serve on professional societies and journal editorial boards. They peer-review for funding agencies like the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the National Science Foundation (NSF), and they perform duties for internal and external committees like the University Senate and the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC). Our mission is to improve people’s lives through excellence in research, teaching, and service in the field of biological chemistry and pharmacology.

It’s an exciting time to be at OSU in the Department of Biological Chemistry and Pharmacology! We encourage you to learn more about this exciting new department by exploring our new website.

Sincerely,

Mark Parthun, PhD
