Preparing for the Biomedical Science Interview
Each year, 48 applicants to the Biomedical Science (BMS) major are invited to participate in a virtual interview via Zoom. For autumn semester admission, the interviews will be conducted in February.
Certainly, interviewing can be an anxious and stressful event. Listed below are FAQs about the BMS interview process that should aid in alleviating some of your anxiety by sharing information about what to expect in the interview.
Who will interview me?
The BMS major utilizes a more traditional interview format. The interviewers are a combination of faculty/staff affiliated with the BMS major, BMS alumni, and current BMS students.
How long will the interview last?
Welcome and overview of the interview format: 30 minutes
Interview #1: 30 minutes
Interview #2: 30 minutes
Interview #3: 15 minutes
In advance of your interview date, you will be sent a personalized agenda with specific times, Zoom links, and the names of your interviewers.
What questions will be asked?
The BMS major interviews students to determine the best 26 students who are a sound fit with the major. Some questions are designed to let you talk about your experiences, and some are designed to challenge you to think at a higher level.
Who is a competitive interviewee?
All students interviewed for the BMS major are intelligent and accomplished. In the interview, the objective is to learn more about your personality, goals, and passions. Resist the temptation to answer questions the way you believe the interviewers want them answered and just be yourself. Remember, your academic record and application were impressive enough to earn you an interview. Now, the interviewers are determining if you are a good fit for the major.
What should I wear?
Students being interviewed for admission to the BMS major should consider this an opportunity to impress their interviewers. Business attire is expected.
What if I’m really nervous?
Relax! The faculty and staff affiliated with the BMS major work with undergraduate students all the time, and they know that interviewees will be nervous. You should be yourself…and present the best “you” that you can be. The major is not looking for a specific type of student to be admitted, and you may be just the student who would be a good fit with the entering class.
Is there anything else I should know?
Not only are you being interviewed, but you should also be interviewing the BMS major to determine if it is the major you really want to pursue at Ohio State. Continue to look at the major critically, and ask questions of the people you meet on your interview day. We want to know your concerns about the major so we can address them and help you decide if BMS is a good fit for you.
