Recruitment and Retention Plan To Enhance Diversity

Ohio State is a national leader in minority education and for the last decade has ranked among the top five universities nationally in the number of PhDs awarded to African-American students (see Ohio State's diversity website) At Ohio State, we celebrate and learn from our diversity and we value individual differences. We see diversity as the uniqueness each of us brings to achieving our shared mission and goals. We recognize and value the different perspectives, characteristics, experiences and attributes of each individual in creating an environment where we thrive on, and benefit from, our differences. A diverse culture optimizes the Medical Center’s ability to provide innovative and evidence-based health care that is personalized for each individual by supporting a greater understanding and appreciation for each individual’s genetic makeup, behavior, experience, and beliefs.

The Biomedical Sciences Graduate Program has, since its inception, placed recruiting American citizens and permanent residents, especially those from underrepresented racial/ethnic groups, as a very high priority. Our record thus far establishes that we are able to recruit outstanding students from underrepresented minorities and that we are prepared to begin to establish a record of NIH training of other Diversity Recruitment groups. As a group, our trainees participate in workshops that are designed to expand their professional development. These activities are relevant because they provide the necessary skills needed to make our program trainees more competitive and resilient.

​Each year the Program is represented at two events sponsored by the OSU Office of Diversity and Inclusion. The Annual Minority Graduate and Professional Student Orientation and Reception are held to welcome incoming students and to provide an opportunity for them to meet current minority students, faculty, and alumni. The second event is the Graduate and Professional Student Recruitment Initiative, which is an event attended by minority students who are interested in an opportunity to visit our OSU graduate programs that may be of interest to them.

The Directors, along with underrepresented trainees from the Biomedical Sciences Graduate Program/NIH-funded training programs, attend Underrepresented Minority (URM) educational conferences where we participate in the recruiting fairs and distribute descriptive materials of both the Biomedical Sciences Graduate Program/NIH-funded training programs. We also attend the Society for Advancement of Chicanos and Native Americans in Science (SACNAS) and Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students (ABRCMS) conferences in October and November. Some of our current African-American students were recruited at an ABRCMS conference, and some of our Hispanic students were recruited at a SACNAS conference.

Each year, we make contact with more than 800 potential applicants at conferences. ​​
