NPLD-GHI is an outreach program of SOAP (Society of Obstetric Anesthesia and Perinatology). The main mission of NPLD-GHI is to promote safe labor and decrease the rate of cesarean delivery. The approach involves establishing 24/7 obstetric anesthesia coverage in Chinese hospitals utilizing a transitional medicine approach: education and modeling multidisciplinary collaborations, including problem-based learning discussions, bedside teaching, daily debriefings, simulation training drills and weekend conferences.
As of June 2017, NPLD-GHI has engaged with about 80 hospitals encompassing a combined annual delivery rate of over one half million since 2008. This medical educational mission trip is a week-long activity. About 30 OSU personal, including about 15 anesthesia faculty/residents/fellows, have participated in the activity.
It is believed that the NPLD-GHI will have a significant impact on rates of local maternal mortality, neonatal mortality and Cesarean delivery. Read more about the program at http://nopainld.org.
A 24/7 obstetric anesthesia coverage has been established and labor epidural analgesia rates have exceeded 50% in approximately 80% of the hospitals engaged with NPLD-GHI.
The last mission trip took place on June 10-18, 2017.
