Faculty tracks – the College of Medicine has four: Tenure-Track, Clinical Faculty, Research Faculty,
and the Associated faculty
Adjunct Faculty – [Associated Faculty] - 0% FTE, non-salaried faculty that
participate in the education, training, and evaluating of graduate or medical students. This
is the title series for community clinicians and scientists who participate in medical student
education. Adjunct faculty can not be paid and usually are not OSU or NCH employees. Titles
are: Adjunct Instructor/Assistant/Associate/Professor of [Department]. (see
also Associated Faculty). An adjunct
appointment is not the same as a Courtesy
Appointment.
Associated faculty – [formerly called Auxiliary] - A broad
category of faculty titles that encompasses adjunct, visiting, and other temporary
and term positions. Associated faculty may or may not be OSU employees. They
may or may not be paid. Titles include: Adjunct
Instructor/Assistant/Associate/Professor; Lecturer and Senior Lecturer; Retiree-Faculty
and Retiree-Faculty Emeritus; Visiting Assistant/Associate/Professor;
Assistant/Associate/Professor of Practice [Department]. Please note that while
this is the University title series, the College recommends a differing working
title. [See Full-time Paid Associated
Faculty]. These positions are usually intended to be short-term, or in the
case of longer term appointments are suitable for faculty who engage (almost)
exclusively in clinical practice.
Clinical Faculty – the track for faculty who
primarily engage in clinical teaching and practice but contribute to all
college missions. The titles for these appointments are:
Assistant/Associate/Professor of Clinical [Department]. These faculty are
typically, but not exclusively, physicians, and they must have a paid faculty
appointment. This is a “regular”
faculty track.
Courtesy Appointment – a title used to recognize a
faculty member from OSU who works collaboratively with or is affiliated with
another OSU department. The courtesy faculty title is always the same as the
primary title. For instance, a faculty member whose home department is
Neurology and has a courtesy appointment in Neuroscience would have the title
of Professor in both departments, but the Neuroscience appointment is entered
like a no-sal.
Full-time Paid Associated
Faculty – An internal designation for faculty on the Associated
faculty who have FTEs of .5-1.0. This may be appropriate to use for faculty
appointments that are expected to be less than 3 years. The titles for these
appointments are: Assistant/Associate/Professor of Practice [Department],
though the College recommends use of the working title series: Clinical
Assistant/Associate/Professor.
Joint Appointment – for faculty members whose effort and
salary is split between one or more TIUs
(see also Courtesy Appointment).
Part-time Faculty – Paid faculty on any track with an
appointment of less than .5 FTE. Part-time faculty are usually on the Associated faculty, though may be
appointed to any faculty track.
Regular Faculty – a reference to faculty on the
tenure-track, clinical faculty and research faculty. No longer an official
University designation for categories of faculty, though still commonly
referenced as a way to distinguish the faculty who comprise the college’s
academic core.
Research Faculty – the faculty track for researchers
who engage exclusively in scholarship. The titles for these appointments are:
Research Assistant/Associate/Professor of [Department].
Tenure-Track – the track for faculty whose primary
effort is the creation and dissemination of new knowledge through the
production of scholarship. The titles for these appointments are:
Assistant/Associate/Professor of [Department]. Faculty on this track are
eligible for tenure at any point, but are required to go up no later than the
sixth year of appointment, called the mandatory review year. Due to time
commitment, faculty members with clinical obligations have an extended
probationary period of 11 years.
TIU – Tenure Initiating Unit, aka
Department. There are 27 TIUs in the College of Medicine. These govern the
primary appointment of a faculty member. A center or an institute is not a TIU
and may not directly appoint or employ a faculty member.
