Research Interests

Dr. Turner has two primary research programs related to the study of immune function in response to the human pathogen Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The first focuses on the changes that take place in the immune system during the natural aging process and how those changes can influence both innate and adaptive immune function during infection with M. tuberculosis. The second is studying immune responses that correlate with an individual's susceptibility to reactivate a previously latent infection with M. tuberculosis. Using different mouse strains with variable susceptibilities to M. tuberculosis the laboratory has identified several cytokines, including interleukin-10, and cellular mechanisms that are associated with reactivation disease.
