The Clinical Skills Education and Assessment Center (CSEAC) is a state-of-the-art training center simulating actual patient care experiences. The changing nature of medical practice and national demand for accountability in medical education highlight the need for a leading-edge clinical skills center.
National accrediting bodies are challenging medical education institutions to demonstrate that medical students and residents possess the requisite knowledge, skills, and attitudes essential to the practice of medicine. The center allows Ohio State to expand existing programs, launch new instructional techniques, and employ new outcomes assessments with the goal of training competent, compassionate professionals while fostering educational research.
A look inside the center
The design for the Standardized Patient space, located in the basement of Prior Hall includes:

- A 40-seat classroom

The design for the Simulation and Procedures space, located on the Sixth Floor of Prior Hall includes:
- 18,000 square feet of space
- High technology simulators and equipment
- A 3,000 square foot procedures training lab
- Wireless environment allowing ready access for PDA’s and laptops
- Digital recording systems
- Four virtual critical care and surgery bays with observation and control station
- An ultrasound room
- A 70-seat seminar room
- Staff offices and conference room
Procedural / High Fidelity Simulation Area
Located on the sixth floor of the Health Sciences Library, the Clinical Skills Education and Assessment Center serves as a learning space for students, residents and other medical trainees from all fields of study to have the opportunity to practice a wide variety of procedures, from drawing blood to starting IVs to defibrillation to laparoscopies to codes to colonoscopies.
The sixth floor spaces are used by medical students with varying experience levels, as well as by the hospital for residency programs, hospital staff and nursing, as well as other colleges, like Pharmacy, Dentistry and Human and Rehabilitation Sciences. All sessions and materials are free to medical students and residents.
Faculty run several established practice sessions in the lab for different rotations, but students are encouraged to initiate the opportunity to practice procedures. Many first-year students use the center to get their first hands-on experience. Student-run interest groups can even organize sessions to be held in the lab. Furthermore, the staff recognizes the inflexibility of medical students' and residents' schedules so it is happy to accommodate different times.
In addition to the millions of dollars worth of simulators and supplies, the center also has video teleconferencing capabilities, where surgeries happening anywhere in the world can be shown live on TV screens. Medical trainees can watch from a bird's eye view of the surgery on one screen and from inside the patient on another, all while speaking with the physicians performing the procedure.
Location
The Clinical Skills Center is in Prior Hall on the sixth floor and the lower level (basement) at 376 W. 10th Ave. (Columbus, OH 43210), which is on the corner of 10th Avenue and Medical Center Drive. Prior Hall, home to the Health Sciences Library, is directly across the street from the Richard M. Ross Hospital and the Safe Auto Visitor's Garage, and it is adjacent to the main hospital (Rhodes/Doan Halls).
