The Winter group primary research interests involve the application of nanotechnology to the nervous system. We have developed novel technologies for both in vitro and in vivo imaging based on quantum dots and iron oxide nanoparticles, including composite particles capable of molecular and cell separations. In addition, we are studying nanostructured materials, primarily three-dimensional hydrogels, to mimic features of tissue architecture that may be present during wound healing or disease states. These materials include natural collagen, hyaluronic acid, and Matrigel and synthetic poly-ethylene glycol-based hydrogels. These materials are also being explored as drug delivery systems to enhance wound repair.
