Dr. Xu’s lab develops multimodal, real-time, and portable medical imaging tools and multifunctional contrast agents for disease detection, therapeutic guidance, controlled drug delivery, and sustained drug release.  Clinical applications of these technologies include cancer treatment, chronic wound assessment, and ocular drug delivery. In the arena of wound imaging, we developed and validated multiple imaging systems and advanced algorithms for quantitative assessment of ischemic wounds. We also developed a goggle navigation system that can be potentially used for image-guided wound debridement. Normal wound healing process involves the reparative phases of inflammation, proliferation, and remodeling.  Interruption of any phase may result in chronically unhealed wounds, amputation, or even patient death. Ischemia in many diabetic or obese patients contributes to the complicated wound healing. Therefore, quantitative imaging of wound tissue ischemia, hypoxia, and margin will provide critical information for appropriate detection, staging, and treatment of clinical wounds.
