Reengineering Translational Science: The Time Is Right

Francis Collins, Director of the National Institutes of Health, describes the goals and structure of the new National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS) in his essay for Science Translational Medicine. Created to advance the development of new diagnostics, devices, and therapeutics, the mission of NCATS is to identify bottlenecks in the therapeutic development pipeline and promote research and innovation that attacks these bottlenecks. With a vision of focusing on what he calls the “actual science of the translational process”, Dr. Collins argues that NCATS will play a vital role in revitalizing translational research.
