U.S. requires new reviews for "dual-use" biological research

The federal government has issued a new policy requiring the review of biological research using high risk agents or toxins that is funded by federal agencies to reduce the risks associated with "dual use research of concern" (DURC). The policy covers select agents (such as highly pathogenic avian influenza virus) used in research that could lead to effects of concern, such as an increase in agent stability or disruption of immunity to a pathogen.
