• Anesthesiology Ultrasound Community of Practice Interest Group

  The Anesthesiology Ultrasound Community of Practice Interest Group is a group of medical student leaders who are dedicated to expanding academic Point of Care Ultrasound (POCUS) in the Department of Anesthesiology by uniting students, residents, fellows, and faculty within a single Community of Practice (COP). The scope of practice of ultrasound in Anesthesiology includes transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) and transesophageal echocardiography (TEE), critical care ultrasound, regional anesthesia techniques, and vascular access ultrasound. We encourage exposure and training in these techniques by implementing ultrasound-focused Clinical, Administrative, Research, and Education (CARE) initiatives in the Department of Anesthesiology. Initiatives include proctoring didactic ultrasound training sessions, hosting journal club sessions, and organizing student-led research projects. The organization encourages leadership over the four years of medical school, and ultrasound projects across all four CARE domains are passed on from year to year. Ultimately, we aim to promote widespread adoption of POCUS within Anesthesiology and improve quality and efficacy of patient care.

  The Cardiology Interest Group (CIG) provides medical students interested in cardiology the opportunity to learn more about the field through lectures, shadowing experiences, and workshops. • Cardiothoracic Surgery Interest Group

  The CTSIG is an active and engaging interest group that provides opportunities to expose medical students to the continuously changing and exciting field of cardiothoracic surgery. We offer students unforgettable activities such as suture and surgical knot clinics, aortic valve replacement clinic, lectures, shadowing opportunities, and great mentorship. We also have “on-call” students interested in transplantation who experience heart or lung transplants from procurement from the donor, to transplantation in the recipient. This exciting experience requires travel, usually by ground or private jet. Many students report that this is one of the most influential activities they have experienced in medical school. Future opportunities in research and summer internships are also offered. The group also helps disperse information about the Summer Scholars Program that accepts students in between M1 and M2 years for a summer long internship alongside the CT surgeons. Our surgeons at The Ohio State University are hands-on and excited to teach the future of medicine!

• Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Student Interest Group

  The Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Student Interest Group (CAPSIG) intends to introduce students to the field of child and adolescent psychiatry while expanding student knowledge of the medical complexities associated with managing mental health disorders in pediatric populations. We engage with the faculty from the department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at Nationwide Children’s Hospital to do case conferences, journal clubs, and sessions about how to pursue a career in CAP.   • Columbus Free Clinic is a free primary and urgent care walk-in clinic serving more than 1,200 underserved patients in the greater Columbus community annually for more than 20 years. 
  • La Clinica Latina is a free, full-service health clinic providing Spanish-speaking individuals with ongoing health care, including gynecological care for women and dental care.
  • The Asian Health Initiative Free Clinic focuses on serving the needs of the Asian community through ongoing health care.
  • Noor Community Clinic serves the Muslim community, which provides routine medical care and physical examinations, treatment for non-emergency illnesses, screenings for diabetes mellitus, high blood pressure and STDs, and health education services.
  • Physician’s Care Connection is a volunteer-based, charitable organization that helps coordinate care for vulnerable adults in Central Ohio. 
  • The New Life Free Clinic aims to provide free primary healthcare services to individuals in need, as well as to provide exposure for medical students and other healthcare professionals to residents of their communities, especially those who are struggling with limited means.

   

• Dermatology Interest Group

  The purpose of the Dermatology Interest Group (DIG) is to promote the field of dermatology to medical students. The field of dermatology focuses on the prevention or treatment of diseases affecting the skin, hair, nails, and adnexa. Whether you are simply exploring dermatology as a field, or committed towards choosing dermatology for a career, you are encouraged to get involved and attend events.

  The purpose of DIG is to:

  1. Serve as a resource for medical students interested in dermatology
  2. Facilitate productive relationships between medical students and with faculty,
  3. Provide oversight for collaboration on projects and volunteer activities related to the field of dermatology.

  We plan to hold several events throughout the year including clinical skills sessions, a match panel, opportunities for shadowing, and community outreach efforts.

  The ENT Interest Group is devoted to providing students with opportunities to learn about the broad field of otolaryngology - head and neck surgery. • Family Medicine Interest Group

  FMIG provides medical students with firsthand experience in family medicine, teaches them valuable skills of medical technique, and creates relationships between students and professionals established in the community. Throughout the year, FMIG convenes meetings on family medicine topics; holds medical skills workshops, such as on phlebotomy and casting; and even sets you up with a mentor. • Interventional Radiology Interest Group

  The Interventional Radiology Interest Group (IRIG) helps students experience the unique specialty that is interventional radiology (IR). IR combines the intuition of diagnostic radiology with the hands-on approach of minimally invasive and endovascular surgery to perform complex procedures under real-time image guidance. From restoring blood flow through special endovascular catheters to cutting off blood supply to tumors using microscopic beads, IR procedures tend to be quick and see fewer complications than traditional open surgery. The IRIG's primary purpose is to introduce medical students to the world of IR and to host an annual symposium with interesting lectures from various Ohio State IR faculty and hands-on activities to simulate the IR procedure experience.

  The Students for Integrative Medicine Interest Group is designed to provide students with opportunities to learn and practice alternative and complementary care techniques, not provided in the medical curriculum. • SurgPrep

  SurgPrep is a longitudinal surgical skills preparation course designed to introduce students to the operating room and teach surgical skills from the first year of medical school to better prepare students for shadowing, rotations, and beyond. The course is composed of 11 sessions spread out over the year that will be taught by a combination of medical students, OR nurse educators, residents, and physicians. The sessions give an introduction to various topics within surgery and teach skills that are vital to learn as medical students such as suturing, scrubbing in, and rounding.

  The College of Medicine Ultrasound Interest Group (USIG) provides extracurricular opportunities for medical students to attain ultrasound skills to better serve patients as future physicians. Students learn ultrasound through hands-on didactic sessions throughout the year and may participate in our Communities of Practice to gain skills specific to a medical specialty. We offer a Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced, and Honors Ultrasound curriculum, which builds upon techniques and clinical decision-making taught in the classroom, all while encouraging lifelong learning.   The Ultrasound in Ophthalmology Community of Practice (USO COP) of USIG aims to unite medical students, residents, and faculty within the Department of Ophthalmology to improve the quality and efficacy of patient care through point of care ultrasound (POCUS). • South Asian Medical Student Association (SAMSA)

  The South Asian Medical Student Association (SAMSA) at OSUCOM seeks to unite, advocate, and support the local South Asian community found within Ohio State University and Columbus, Ohio at large. As a newer organization, our mission lies in three tenants of culture, mentorship, and advocacy. Regarding culture, both students and faculty have indicated a desire to raise awareness and celebrate cultural events, such as Diwali, Holi, or Eid, as a community. Second, our organization plans to form connections between the undergraduate groups, SAMSA, and South Asian physicians at OSU Wexner Medical Center and Nationwide Children’s Hospital, to both streamline mentorship and offer leadership experiences. • Buckeye Blanket Bash

  The Buckeye Blanket Bash is a one-day charity event where Ohio State students, faculty, staff, and local community members gather to make no-sew fleece blankets and cards for cancer patients in our community. Blankets are then personally delivered by volunteers to patients at The James Cancer Hospital, Nationwide Children’s Hem/Onc division, and to Palliative Care patients throughout OSUWMC. Interested students can participate in our various committees that work to advertise the event, recruit speakers/musicians, and secure food donations.   1. AWARENESS: Delivering student- and faculty-led talks on the physician's role in global health and equity.

  PODEMOS is a student-led 501c3 non-profit organization focused on providing sustainable care to the communities surrounding El Progreso, Honduras. We are an interprofessional organization comprised of medical, nursing, dental, and pharmacy students. Our goals are twofold: 1) to provide quality primary care services to marginalized communities in Honduras, and 2) to provide a valuable educational experience to Ohio State student participants. We run two brigades each year, as well as take care of chronic care patients with diabetes, hypertension, and/or asthma year-round through our chronic care program. • The 2nd and 7 Foundation Medical Branch

  The purpose of the 2nd and 7 Foundation Medical Branch at the Ohio State University College of Medicine is to promote literacy and healthy habits among students while giving them early exposure to career options. The organization also gives medical students a unique opportunity to interact with and teach second graders. The medical students will sign up to read to students over Zoom a few times a month and discuss the lessons from each story. To help the second graders build at home libraries, which have been shown to improve literacy, the students will receive a hard copy of the book that the medical students read to them, provided by the 2nd and 7 Foundation. Because we have the option to serve via Zoom and mail the books, our organization will not be limited by location. We intend to prioritize underserved areas across Ohio.

• The Spin Doctors

  The Spin Doctors is a team of medical students from Ohio State University College of Medicine who participate in the annual Pelotonia cancer fundraising bike ride. The team rides with a purpose, aiming to raise funds for cancer research and honor those directly and indirectly in our lives who have battled or are battling cancer. Pelotonia is a citywide event the first weekend of August that involves over 6,000 riders of all skill levels with One Goal of ending cancer. Routes range from 20 to 200 miles, and all fundraising goes to cancer research at The Ohio State University James Comprehensive Cancer Center.

  The Unhoused Community Advocacy and Networking (U-CAN) organization aims to minimize gaps in healthcare accessibility by implementing incentive-based primary prevention education programs on skin, breast, and reproductive health. To empower community members with the resources necessary to implement positive health changes, donations such as sunscreen, detergent, cleansing and menstrual hygiene products are provided.   In 2015, the Bowen Circle joined our Humanism in Medicine Family. This group focuses on celebrating the legacy of Dr. Clotilde Bowen and selecting the Bowen Award honoree. Dr. Clotilde Bowen was a strong and selfless leader, a woman truly ahead of her time: she was the first African American female to graduate from The Ohio State University College of Medicine in 1947, she became the first female physician in the United States Army in 1956 when she served as a pulmonary specialist at Valley Forge, PA, and she became the first female commander of a military hospital when she was assigned to Ft. Benjamin Harrison, IN, to name just a few of her outstanding accomplishments. This award has been designed to recognize a current female student at The Ohio State University College of Medicine who exemplifies many of the same characteristics as Dr. Clotilde Bowen: one who is a pioneer, who stays strong in the face of adversity, and who is a leader to the community around her.

Servant leadership is a concept defined as "a non-traditional leadership philosophy, embedded in a set of behaviors and practices that place the primary emphasis on the well-being of those being served." Members of the group who are nominated by current servant leaders come together on a quarterly basis to grow in fellowship and learn from others with a like-minded attitude.

  The Photography Group is a subgroup of Visual Arts that encourages passion in photography via themed challenges, photo field trips, Snapchat takeovers, and collaborations with other Humanism in Medicine groups.

  Ether Arts, the literary and visual arts magazine of the Ohio State College of Medicine, is officially calling for submissions! This is a magazine written and published by medical students and other health care professionals at Ohio State. It is meant to showcase who we are beyond medicine, so we accept unpublished work from all disciplines including fiction, nonfiction, poetry, drawings, photography, and painting. Also, we accept work both with and without medical themes.

  The CMDA works to foster a community in which Christian medical and dental students can come and share experiences, thoughts, and concerns with each other on a regular basis. CMDA also seeks to help Christian students learn how to integrate their professions with their faith and to reach out to the community. Our activities include prayer meetings, Bible studies, monthly dinner meetings with speakers from the community, service projects, and social events.

  The College of Medicine Football (Soccer) Club at the Ohio State University (OSUCOM F.C.) was established to give Ohio State medical students an outlet to the stresses of medical school through weekly organized and friendly soccer matches. The club offers a unique platform that allows professional students and others in medicine with similar interests to compete in friendly matches while providing the opportunity for social interaction among medical trainees from different backgrounds and experiences.

• I Can Medical Mentorship

  I Can Medical Mentorship is an organization that works with middle school students who are underrepresented in medicine. We are partnered with two local schools: Champion Middle School and Columbus Preparatory School for Girls. We plan monthly mentorship days at the schools that involve fun and educational hands-on activities for students.

• MedPaws

  MedPaws is a bit of a different student organization. There are no presentations, no panels, and no shadowing (there is free food though!). The goal of MedPaws is to provide stress relief to fellow medical students through animals. Prior to tests, we host events where members bring their pets such as cats and dogs to play with medical students in a stress-free environment. Students can play with the animals or just socialize in a place outside the lecture hall or library. MedPaws believes that it’s important that students take opportunities to relax and unwind in the face of the ever-rising pressures and responsibilities. Medical school isn’t all about studying, after all.

• Safety Nets

  Maintaining mental health is more important in today's world than ever before. The goal of Safety Nets is to bring people together and offer a space to relax, have fun, and promote wellness primarily through fun events and sports. We connect students with others who share common sport interests, however popular or niche they may be. In addition, we plan to use the funds that we raise through tournaments and other activities to support initiatives that improve medical student wellness. When school gets difficult, everybody needs an outlet – everybody needs a Safety Net.

• Wilderness Medicine Interest Group

  Wilderness Medicine Interest Group (WMIG) is a group of students that are passionate about exploring the outdoors and want to understand how to manage medical problems in a wilderness setting. Fundamentals of wilderness medicine include understanding and minimizing risk in outdoor excursions, stabilizing patients before definitive medical care is available, and evacuation techniques. WMIG goes on weekend trips and holds events throughout the year to explore and practice various Wilderness Medicine topics. In the spring, there is an opportunity for students to do a weekend of more intense training to receive their Advanced Wilderness Life Support (AWLS) certification.

  The HPC is comprised of 16 Ohio State medical students. On a day-to-day basis, the HPC serves as an informal resource to faculty and students in the College of Medicine. When an issue of academic misconduct or a breach of professionalism does occur, members from the HPC assume a more active role, in the form of a committee hearing comprised of students and faculty. HPC is open to all questions and comments from colleagues that pertain to matters of honor and professionalism. Members of HPC are obliged to keep matters presented to the council strictly confidential.

  The Office of Student Affairs serves as a liaison in helping the College of Medicine recognize the academic and humanistic achievements of our students. Election to Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society is a distinction that will accompany you throughout your career as a physician. The Gold Humanism Honor Society honors those students who demonstrate "excellence in clinical care, leadership, compassion, and dedication to service."   IPC is the student government organization that represents all students from the six professional schools at the university level.   The College of Medicine is dedicated to spurring on innovative learning techniques to optimize student’s academic experience. PREP, Professor-Reviewed Exam Practice, is a student-led initiative that collaborates with OSUCOM Faculty to create curriculum-specific formative material. Questions are written by students, reviewed and revised by OSUCOM Faculty, and have the ability to provide dynamic feedback to inform teaching strategy.   The Research Interest Group promotes medical student research by providing students with information and opportunities to participate in research here at OSU and beyond. We facilitate several events throughout the year, including Research Day at the College of Medicine and several speaker series with faculty who are recruiting medical students.
