Philicia Duncan, MD
- Assistant Director of Belonging and Cultural Inclusion
Since 2018, the Division of Hospital Medicine has prioritized fostering an inclusive environment that embraces belonging, cultural representation, and diverse representation as core values to enhance excellence in patient care and support the growth and success of our team. Rather than treating this as a standalone initiative, we integrate these efforts into our daily practice to strengthen collaboration, professional growth and service to our diverse patient populations.
Our division reflects a broad range of backgrounds and experiences, extending beyond ethnicity. It is a rich tapestry composed of race, gender, ethnicity, age, personality, professional function, education, and lived experiences – all of which enriches and strengthen our team and ensure we meet the needs of the communities we serve.
This breadth of perspectives is essential to achieving our most critical goal: providing the highest quality of care for our patients. A well-rounded team enables us to connect with our patients and families more effectively, fosters innovation, and enhances our ability to attract and retain top health care professionals. We believe a culture of belonging and empowerment is essential to our success.
We are committed to fostering a supportive division where all team members feel a sense of belonging and cultural inclusion empowering them to succeed and enhancing our collective ability to provide excellence in patient care and service to our communities.
We are dedicated to enhancing cultural understanding through education while recognizing and celebrating the diverse cultures, beliefs, and identities within our team and the patients we serve.
To be a leader in fostering a professional culture of belonging, diverse perspectives, and cultural understanding—advancing the highest quality care, academic excellence, and team development.
The Four "E"s are the pillars that we have selected as the foundation of our committee’s objectives:
Hospital Medicine is committed to cultivating a team that values and respects the unique backgrounds and experiences of our employees and the communities we serve.
We actively promote initiatives that cultivate belonging, respect, and shared understanding through the recruitment and development of our doctors, advanced practice providers, nurses, and administrative staff. We also support opportunities for employees to engage with and appreciate diverse perspectives within our division.
Hospital Medicine is committed to building a workforce that celebrates the diversity of our employees and of the communities we serve. Additionally, we encourage and have a variety of initiatives designed to help build and maintain this culture of diversity and inclusion through the recruitment of our doctors, advanced practice providers, nurses and administrative staff. Hospital Medicine also helps employees advance their opportunities to explore and embrace diversity in the workplace.
The Diversity Journal Club is a space created to engage together on topics of equity, inclusion, and diversity. The mission is to address the needs of our division and discuss meaningful changes we can make to make our program a more welcoming and inclusive community.
