Our Commitment to a Collaborative and Inclusive Division

Since 2018, the Division of Hospital Medicine has prioritized fostering an inclusive environment that embraces belonging, cultural representation, and diverse representation as core values to enhance excellence in patient care and support the growth and success of our team. Rather than treating this as a standalone initiative, we integrate these efforts into our daily practice to strengthen collaboration, professional growth and service to our diverse patient populations.

Our division reflects a broad range of backgrounds and experiences, extending beyond ethnicity. It is a rich tapestry composed of race, gender, ethnicity, age, personality, professional function, education, and lived experiences – all of which enriches and strengthen our team and ensure we meet the needs of the communities we serve.

This breadth of perspectives is essential to achieving our most critical goal: providing the highest quality of care for our patients. A well-rounded team enables us to connect with our patients and families more effectively, fosters innovation, and enhances our ability to attract and retain top health care professionals. We believe a culture of belonging and empowerment is essential to our success.

Mission

We are committed to fostering a supportive division where all team members feel a sense of belonging and cultural inclusion empowering them to succeed and enhancing our collective ability to provide excellence in patient care and service to our communities.

We are dedicated to enhancing cultural understanding through education while recognizing and celebrating the diverse cultures, beliefs, and identities within our team and the patients we serve.

Vision Statement

To be a leader in fostering a professional culture of belonging, diverse perspectives, and cultural understanding—advancing the highest quality care, academic excellence, and team development.

Our Pillars: The Four ‘E’s of Belonging and Cultural Inclusion

The Four "E"s are the pillars that we have selected as the foundation of our committee’s objectives:

  • Educate our leaders and employees by integrating historical context, honoring our legacy, and fostering strategic governance that promotes equity and cultivates a culture of dignity and respect.
  • Examine policies, procedures, and workplace practices to identify and address barriers that may negatively impact patient care, employee well-being, and overall productivity.
  • Evaluate current inclusion-focused initiatives and implement data-driven tools to ensure accountability and continuous improvement.
  • Encourage best practices and next practices that foster respect, inclusion, and a culture where all individuals are valued and empowered to succeed.
