Female faculty members receive leadership, health care fellowships

Two programs, the Hedwig van Ameringen Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine (ELAM) and Executive Leadership in Health Care (ELH) programs, which focus on developing women leaders, are important initiatives to help us achieve this. Established in 1995, ELAM is hosted by Drexel University College of Medicine as a one-year, part-time fellowship and is designed to develop the personal and professional skills required to lead in academic health care.

27 faculty members at Ohio State have been named ELAM/ELH fellows. ELAM alumnae number more than 1,500 and serve in leadership positions, including as CEOs, CMOs, CNOs or CFOs, at 300 academic medical centers around the world.

Two faculty members at the Ohio State College of Medicine will join ELAM’s ranks this year: Gloria Fleming, MD, clinical professor of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences and vice chair of the department’s Diversity, Inclusion, Equity and Talent, and Debra Boyer, MD, MHPE, clinical professor of Pediatrics and a physician at Nationwide Children’s Hospital. One faculty member will join the ELH rank – Sabrena Noria, MD, PhD, clinical professor of Surgery at the College of Medicine. To be accepted into the program, each fellow must be nominated and supported by the dean or another senior official of their institution.

Dr. Fleming says she’s very excited to be part of this important leadership development program. She credits the guidance of her sponsor, Carol R. Bradford, MD, MS, FACS, dean of the College of Medicine and vice president for Health Sciences at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, in helping her be part of the movement.

“It is so important for women to be mentored and developed at all stages of their career as they ascend in leadership,” Dr. Fleming says. “As a fellow, I am excited to participate in this intensive leadership development training, working collaboratively to advance women in health care.”

ELAM is the only longitudinal training tailored to preparing women for senior leadership roles in schools of medicine, dentistry, public health and pharmacy in North America. In the program, fellows will design action projects to address an institutional or departmental need or priority. They’ll learn to face challenges of academic medical centers and develop leadership skills. This year, ELAM’s 2024-2025 class will be the largest to date, sending a wave of leadership-prepared women into the academic health care system.

Congratulations to this year’s ELAM and ELH fellows!
