Ohio State study identifies novel fat molecule to improve heart function

A new study at The Ohio State University College of Medicine has identified a molecule released by the body’s fat-burning process that could hold the key to the treatment and prevention of cardiovascular disease, a leading cause of death in the world. The study, co-led by physiology and cell biology professors Kristin Stanford, PhD, and Mark Ziolo, PhD, found that the release of the hormone lipokine, 12,13-diHOME, during exercise, or by increasing the amount of brown fat, is beneficial to heart function. They also found lower levels of the hormone in patients with cardiovascular disease. Their findings offer potential therapy for individuals suffering from heart disease.
