Ohio State app development competition furthers new ideas and innovations in medicine and health care
Developing an app with the potential to improve research, clinical practice and deliver innovative patient care is key to helping practitioners and care givers advance and transform the health of our communities. The call for proposals for the 2024 OSU-COM AI App Development Competition provides learners, faculty, clinicians and staff at The Ohio State University College of Medicine an opportunity to figure out the “why” and “how” beyond their ideas and develop a product to solve current problems.
Derek Harmon, PhD, clinical associate professor in the Department of Biomedical Education and Anatomy at the Ohio State College of Medicine, created the OSU-COM AI App Development Competition, or App-a-Thon, to bring together clinicians, faculty, researchers and students in the university’s College of Engineering – Department of Computer Science and Engineering. He says, together, they will work to develop app ideas into protypes and, at the same time, create the infrastructure needed to translate ideas into solutions.
“Strong proposals will make a clear case for why the app should be developed,” Dr. Harmon says. “Then, chosen groups will work with a small team to develop a software prototype.”
Proposals can be submitted by a student, faculty, clinician, or staff member from the Ohio State College of Medicine. At least one member of the team is required to be available to meet the engineering team at least once a week over the AI App Development Phase which will last for two weeks. Judges will determine the winning project at a final event.
