Ohio State’s No. 4 ranking represents total NIH funding granted from Oct. 1, 2019, through Sept. 30, 2020, during which time we garnered $20.9 million.
Our department had five newly funded researchers and three of the top-50 highest-funded principal investigators:
- Raphael Pollock, MD, PhD, at #5 with $6.03 million
- William Carson, MD, at #7 with $5.63 million
- Jianjie Ma, PhD, at #43 with $1.69 million.

Our remarkable funding award amounts are driven by the leadership of Jianjie Ma, PhD, vice chair of Basic and Translational Research, and Henna Santry, MD, vice chair of Health Services Research; and Judy Opalek, PhD, director of Research Administration, also played a pivotal role in the process.
