Biography

I was recruited at The Ohio State University in 2004 as a Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine physician. I serve as the Director of the Sleep Medicine Program, a large academic sleep medicine program that I helped develop in alignment with the service, teaching, and research missions of our medical center. I maintain both a basic science laboratory examining the effects of hypoxia on adipose tissue biology as well as a clinical research program in sleep disorders where I serve as a mentor to undergraduate and medical students, medical residents, and post-doctoral fellows. Over the past several few years, I have been actively involved in an international consortium of sleep researchers- the Sleep Apnea Global Interdisciplinary Consortium (SAGIC), a collaborative group comprised of international experts in the field of sleep research. Our clinical investigations in SAGIC revealed three symptom subtypes of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) across a worldwide sleep center population that have now been robustly validated in various community and clinic-based populations. These OSA symptom subtypes have recently been shown to predict OSA subjects who are at risk for developing cardiovascular events, a step towards personalized care for sleep apnea. We have also developed objective definitions of extreme phenotypes of OSA that can be applied in sleep centers throughout the world for future studies on genetic, anatomic and physiological pathways to OSA.

  • Effects of hypoxia on adipose tissue biology
  • Cardiovascular and metabolic consequences of sleep disorders
