About

Biography

I am Cynthia Roberts, PhD, professor in the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences at The Ohio State University College of Medicine. I specialize in corneal and ocular biomechanics, ocular imaging technologies, and intraocular pressure measurement. My research focuses on the clinical assessment of corneal and ocular biomechanics, on optical coherence tomography (OCT) with biomechanical assessment, and on improving the accuracy of intraocular pressure measurements.

I hold dual appointments at The Ohio State University, as professor in the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences in the College of Medicine and as professor of Biomedical Engineering. I also serve as the Martha G. and Milton Staub Chair for Research, and as the director of Resident Research, both in the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences.

My work centers on advancing the understanding and clinical application of ocular biomechanics and imaging technologies in order to improve the diagnosis, monitoring and management of eye disease. Through interdisciplinary collaboration, I seek to translate engineering and imaging innovations into tools that can enhance patient care and clinical decision-making.

Mentorship is a central part of my academic career. I have guided graduate students, medical students and resident physician researchers who have gone on to leadership roles in academia, industry and clinical practice. I am committed to fostering the next generation of scientists, engineers and physician-scientists through research training and professional development.

I have delivered more than 300 invited presentations nationally and internationally and have been named four times to the international Power List of the "100 Most Influential People in Ophthalmology.”

My contributions to research, leadership and mentorship have been recognized through numerous honors. These include the Distinguished Scholar Award from Ohio State’s College of Engineering and its Department of Biomedical Engineering; recognition for leadership and service toward the upliftment of women; the College of Engineering Mentor of the Next Generation Award from Ohio State; and the Department of Biomedical Engineering Chair’s Award for Outstanding and Exceptional Contribution to biomedical engineering, also from Ohio State.
