Allison Macerollo, MD, named 2024 Family Medicine Educator of the Year 

Allison MacerolloThe Ohio Academy of Family Physicians (OAFP) has awarded Allison Macerollo, MD, clinical associate professor of Family and Community Medicine at The Ohio State University College of Medicine, the 2024 Family Medicine Educator of the Year. The OAFP annually presents the award to educators who exhibit extraordinary, beyond-the-call-of-duty merit and encourage students to pursue the ideals of family medicine.

Dr. Macerollo also serves as vice chair for Medical Education for her department. Her role teaching medical students the art of medicine through effective communication skills and good decision making led the OAFP to select her.

Dr. Macerollo credits staying energized to continue the mission of family medicine education to the thoughtful, motivated, diverse and passionate people she works with every day. She says together, the interdisciplinary group works to help patients and communities be better, which in turn helps her be a better person and a better educator. 

“I am enthusiastic about my work and helping all the people I encounter on the job – including patients, medical students and co-workers – to become their best selves,” Dr. Macerollo says.

As a family medicine physician at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, Dr, Macerollo specializes in women’s health, overcoming barriers to health and caring for underserved populations. Carol R. Bradford, MD, MS, FACS, dean of the Ohio State College of Medicine, says Dr. Macerollo’s focus on helping students, residents and faculty plan and execute their professional goals helps them experience success in their endeavors. 

“This award honors Dr. Macerollo’s leadership in medical teaching and education and her work to support our learners and patients,” Dr. Bradford says. “She plays a tremendous role in developing the best physicians and even better family medicine physicians.” 

In addition to her academic and leadership roles, Dr. Macerollo volunteers for La Clinica Latina, where she supervises students and provides care to the Spanish-speaking community. This work ensures she provides service to community members who need access to innovative care. 

“I believe in listening to my patients and applying my critical thinking skills to advocate for their health in every situation,” Dr. Macerollo says.

The College of Medicine congratulates Dr. Macerollo for this recognition as the Family Medicine Educator of the Year.
