FAME Award Recipients 2019
The Ohio State University College of Medicine’s Center for Faculty Advancement, Mentoring and Engagement (FAME) has designed programs to help scholars, researchers and educators make connections and gain experience in academic medicine. The Center for FAME coordinates multiple awards for faculty members in The Ohio State University College of Medicine community, including the College of Medicine Distinguished Professor Award, The Outstanding Mentor Award for Associate Professors, and The Outstanding Mentor Award for Professors.
The dean of the College of Medicine awards annually the permanent, honorific title of College of Medicine Distinguished Professor on a competitive basis for one faculty member who has a truly execptional record of accomplishment appropriate to track. The honoree receives a $5,000 honorarium and distinction with the permanent title of College of Medicine Distinguished Professor. Soledad Fernandez, PhD, is this year’s recipient of the College of Medicine Distinguished Professor Award.
Dr. Fernandez is a research professor and vice chair for Collaborative Research and director of the Center for Biostatistics in the Department of Biomedical Informatics. She has more than 140 publications. Her research interests are statistical genetics, feature selection methods and design of experiments for laboratory and clinical studies.
The Outstanding Mentor Award for Professors honors Ohio State University College of Medicine faculty members at the rank of professor who have demonstrated exceptional dedication and career commitment for faculty mentoring. On a competitive basis, the Center for FAME annually recognizes one professor’s achievements as a mentor with the honor of Outstanding Mentor. The honoree is awarded with a $3,500 honorarium and distinction as the Center for FAME’s Outstanding Mentor for Professors.
Dana McTigue, PhD, professor of Neuroscience, received the Outstanding Mentor Award for Professors this year. Dr. McTigue is professor and vice chair of Research in the Department of Neuroscience and in the Center for Brain and Spinal Cord Repair.
The Outstanding Mentor Award for Associate Professors, formerly called The Distinguished Mentor Award, was established in 2014-15 in recognition of the launch of the Center for FAME’s college-wide mentoring program. This award honors one College of Medicine associate professor who has demonstrated exceptional dedication and career commitment for faculty mentoring. This year’s honorary recipient is Bhuvaneswari Ramaswamy, MD. Dr. Ramaswamy will receive a $3,500 honorarium and distinction as the center for FAME’s Outstanding Mentor for Associate Professors.
Dr. Ramaswamy, associate professor and a member of the Translational Therapeutics Program at the OSUCCC – James, is focused on improving the outcomes in breast cancer through addressing drug resistance and cancer disparities. She is the principal investigator of multiple clinical trials and the recipient of several research grants. She has co-authored many articles in well-respected journals such as Cancer Research.
