Grieco elected national vice chair of AAMC’s Group on Student Affairs
As associate dean for Student Life in The Ohio State University College of Medicine, Alex Grieco, MD, focuses on cultivating learning environments where all learners have an equitable opportunity to thrive throughout their journey toward becoming a physician. At the college, this begins with a holistic lens – looking beyond test scores and academic accomplishments – to center on each learner’s individual experiences and attributes. The goal of this approach is supporting a culture where every learner feels valued and has the ability to excel.
“Our medical education community must extend this holistic approach throughout the medical education continuum, beginning with student affairs practices and support that we offer through each phase of the curriculum,” Dr. Grieco says. “This requires that we continuously review and reflect on our policies and practices for student support and empowerment.”
Dr. Grieco’s work to ensure learners master the professional and personal skills needed to drive breakthrough health care solutions goes beyond his efforts at the college. He’s a long-time member of the Association of American Medical Colleges’ (AAMC) Group on Student Affairs (GSA), which brings together staff and faculty leaders and experts from the nation’s medical schools to advance and optimize student affairs practices and adapt to the unique needs, problems and resources in regions around the country. He’s served on the GSA Committee on Student Diversity Affairs and on the Central Region GSA as member-at-large, vice chair and chair.
Last month, Dr. Grieco was elected as national vice chair for the GSA. Through a leadership progression culminating in the role of chair, he’ll join the executive committee of the organization, representing the Ohio State College of Medicine through leadership and service to all AAMC-member medical schools.
Daniel Clinchot, MD, vice dean for Education for the College of Medicine and professor and chair of Biomedical Education and Anatomy, says Dr. Grieco’s service at the AAMC has rapidly progressed over the past five years.
“This appointment recognizes Dr. Grieco’s attention to medical education that equips learners and trainees to work in evolving and complex systems of care,” Dr. Clinchot says. “I don’t recall that Ohio State has ever had someone serve in this national capacity at the AAMC.”
Dr. Grieco’s commitment ensures learners develop the skills to become future physicians, researchers and practitioners in collaborative environments where they can make a lasting difference in the lives of their patients and colleagues. He looks forward to furthering his reach and honoring the individuals who’ve inspired him and enabled him to serve in this new role.
“The greatest honor, as always, is serving students and the staff and faculty members who support them here at Ohio State, and now, throughout the country, in the name of “Buckeye Nation,” Dr. Grieco says.
