Mark Bechtel, MD, to chair College of Medicine’s new Department of Dermatology
Carol R. Bradford, MD, MS, FACS, dean of The Ohio State University College of Medicine, is pleased to announce the formation of a new Department of Dermatology, effective July 1. Mark Bechtel, MD, clinical professor of Internal Medicine, will serve as the chair of the new department.
“I am really excited about this new department as it enables us to continue to be one of the top medical schools in the nation,” says Dr. Bradford, who is also vice president for Health Sciences at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center. “Together, with our top-notch faculty in the new Department of Dermatology, Dr. Bechtel will help The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center reach our ambition of transforming the health of our communities.”
Dr. Bechtel joined the faculty at The Ohio State University College of Medicine in 1982 as assistant professor. He rose through the ranks to become associate professor in 2005 and full professor in 2012. Dr. Bechtel served as division director of Dermatology from 2005 to January 2015 and December 2016 to present. He served as professor of Dermatology at the University of Pennsylvania from 2015-2016.
He maintains a busy clinical practice, and was the owner and president of Mark A. Bechtel, M.D., Inc./Capitol City Dermatology from 1981-2005. He was also a pediatric dermatologist at Nationwide Children’s Hospital from 1982-2008, serving as chief of Pediatric Dermatology from 1989-2007.
Over the course of his career, he has been a member of many national associations, serving as the past president of the State Medical Board of Ohio, the past president of the Ohio Dermatology Association and the past president of the Columbus Medical Association.
Dr. Bechtel has served on the editorial boards of four leading health care journals. He also holds numerous awards, including two Presidential Citations from the American Academy of Dermatology and a Distinguished Service Award from the Ohio Dermatological Association. He has been awarded the Earl Metz Distinguished Professor Award in 2011 as well as the Mazzaferri-Ellison Master Clinician Award in 2018.
Dr. Bechtel completed his MD at Indiana University and an Internal Medicine internship at Indiana University Medical Center. He then completed a Dermatology residency at the University of Louisville.
