“In the realm of ideas, everything depends on enthusiasm; in the real world, all rests on perseverance.”
– Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

I hope you had a chance to tune in last week as the Ohio State Buckeyes once again proved their mettle through talent, camaraderie, strategy and sheer perseverance. The 2024-25 football season was laden with challenges, from injuries to formidable opponents. Yet, with unwavering determination, our Buckeyes pushed through every obstacle, culminating in their much-deserved national championship win.

Their journey to this year’s national championship could be taught as a master class in what Dr. Angela Duckworth, a prominent psychologist from the University of Pennsylvania, calls “grit” – a combination of passion and perseverance for achieving long-term goals. Research has shown that grit is one critical predictor of success.

We all face challenges in our daily lives. So, how do we bolster our grit to reach our goals, despite opposition or discouragement? According to research, there are a few keys to improving our stick-to-it-iveness.

First, experts say, love what you do. This might seem simple, but if you love what you do, you are more likely to keep going, no matter what you face along the way.

Next, accept that perfection is a myth. No one wants to fail, but setbacks are an inevitable part of life. When your efforts do not go as planned, it is equally important that you acknowledge your frustration and reflect on what you learned from the experience. This intersection is where true growth occurs.

We must also be willing to ask for help. Our colleagues, mentors, friends, coaches and loved ones all play a role in supporting us as we strive to meet certain milestones. Their help makes us stronger and gives us the encouragement we need to keep going.

Likewise, we cannot be afraid to try and fail and try again – especially when we are passionate about something. Our setbacks and our accomplishments are waypoints along a much longer journey, not our destination. That means we have to commit to getting back up, dusting ourselves off and moving forward.

Our Buckeyes are a testament to how steady persistence and passion can lead to success over the long term. That is the power of perseverance in action.

Cheers to our national champions! GO BUCKS!
