A Message from the Dean of the College of Medicine

The Ohio State University College of Medicine is a shining example of dedicated service to innovative education, transformative patient care, life-altering research and impactful community service. As your dean, I have seen the care and commitment that you, our friends and colleagues, have given to this organization. With your kind hearts and brilliant minds, there is no limit to what we can accomplish.
In appreciation of your extraordinary contributions to the college, I am privileged to announce the College of Medicine Dean’s Excellence Awards — a series of awards designed to recognize our valued staff and faculty members. We will honor individuals who have excelled in their careers and have made exceptional contributions to education, research, care and community service, and who are advancing diversity, equity and inclusion.
I look forward to reading your nominations, hearing your stories and having the privilege of identifying the next cohort of award recipients.
Award nominations:
- The nominations window is open from May 1 – June 30
- Self-nominations are not accepted
- The nominee must be in good standing with at least a 75% FTE
Staff and Faculty Award Nomination packets must include:
- Nominating Statement: A nominating statement citing specific accomplishments and services of the nominee (maximum two pages, single-spaced). The nomination letter should be from a College of Medicine employee and addressed to the dean of the College of Medicine, describing the contributions and accomplishments that qualify the individual for the award. Note: For faculty, this letter must come from the faculty member’s chair or division chief. For staff, this letter must come from the staff member's immediate supervisor."
- Supporting Materials: No more than two additional letters (1 page, single-spaced). Letters of support should represent the diverse group of colleagues/customers (faculty, staff, students, or other individuals) who have personal knowledge of and who have benefited from the nominee’s services.

College of Medicine Awards Information
Selection process and announcement:
For staff awards: The College of Medicine Staff Advisory Committee will review all staff nominations and will make recommendations for two to three finalists per award for the dean’s consideration.
For faculty awards: The College of Medicine Faculty Awards Committee will review all faculty nominations and make recommendations for two to three finalists per award for the dean’s consideration.
For education awards: The Education Awards Review Committee will review all education award nominations and will make recommendations for finalists for the dean’s consideration.
For the Inclusive Excellence award: The Office of Diversity and Inclusion will review nominations for this award and make recommendations for two to three finalists for this award for the dean’s consideration.
The Dean of the College of Medicine will make final selections in October of each year.
Recipients will be notified, confidentially, in October of each year.
Nominees will be announced at the Dean's State of the College in early October. Award recipients will be announced at the Dean’s Winter Forum. Awards will be given at the Dean’s Excellence Awards Gala in early spring.

Recognizes an employee who
demonstrates superb leadership in the
management of staff within their unit or the
college.
This award is open to an employee who has
been at the college for at least one year.
Criteria:
- Demonstrates excellence in their work
- Creates a positive work environment for all employees
- Collaborates creatively and productively with other units/departments across the college
- Shows great attention to detail that results in a recognizable impact
- Serves as a resource to peers
- Actively participates in local and national organizations
- Shows investment in their work and the mission of the unit and college
Description: This award recognizes one faculty member and one staff member who have prioritized the college's ambition to be a national leader of inclusive excellence. The awardees are leaders in creating and sustaining a culture of inclusion and belonging through implementation of innovative practices and/or research. They develop and nurture an environment where all people are valued, heard, and can thrive.
Criteria:
- Promotes a welcoming and supportive community
- Promotes varied perspectives
- Facilitates inclusion and/or access for all members of the university community
- Develops cultural awareness and competency within their unit or college
- Fosters intercultural communication and collaboration
Recognizes a long-term employee of the College of Medicine who has exhibited ongoing performance excellence through their service. Minimum 15 years of service total to The Ohio State University, with at least 10 of those years spent with the College of Medicine. This award recognizes an employee who has made a significant impact on the unit/college/university through outstanding dedication and accomplishments.
Criteria:
- Demonstrates exceptional service/leadership over a significant period of time
- Makes contributions of lasting impact
- Exhibits commitment to serve the unit or college
- Displays wisdom and depth of service/leadership that has made a significant difference to individuals or groups
- Motivates and inspires those around them to strive for excellence
- Assists others in achieving professional goals
- Demonstrates a high degree of initiative and dependability
- Upholds the values of the unit or college
- Demonstrates leadership qualities
- Enhances the unit or college’s image via representation
Recognizes College of Medicine staff and faculty who contribute to the local, national or global community in an extraordinary fashion, building a sense of unity and purpose in their community. This award is open to an employee who has been at the college for at least one year.
Criteria:
- Shares time, knowledge, skills, expertise and relationship building to lead community transformation
- Demonstrates positive values and behaviors that influence others to emulate or aspire to emulate
- Mentors community members
- Assists others in improving their communities through volunteer programs, including free clinics, clinical and educational programming, social groups or other activities
- Has contributed to at least one community program or initiative with measurable results of how they impacted participants of that community program or initiative
Recognizes an employee who strives to uphold the strategic pillars of the College of Medicine. The awardee demonstrates exceptional leadership and commitment to the values and mission of the unit or college. The awardee may be adept at carrying out the strategies of one or more of these pillars: Talent; Diversity, Equity and Inclusion; Discovery; Education; Care; Health Equity; and Resource Stewardship. This award is open to an employee who has been at the college for at least one year.

Description: This award recognizes a professional staff member within the College of Medicine who has been in their position for up to five years and has had, in that time, a significant impact on their unit and/or the college. This award will be conferred upon a staff member who demonstrates a high level of achievement in their role within a short period of time. Example 1: Someone who entered into a newly created position and created, cultivated and helped that position to grow. Example 2: Someone who was newly promoted or stepped into a new role and sought opportunities for improvement and created positive changes in the workplace.

- Demonstrates excellence in their work
- Made significant contributions to the college in the early stage of their career or new role
- Track-record reflects ongoing and exceptional growth in contribution to the profession and increased levels of responsibility and sphere of impact
- Track record reflects a strong career trajectory with the possibility of forward advancement and leadership
- Contributes to a positive work environment
- Positive attitude, resiliency, persistence
Recognizes a scientist or group of scientists (including employees and/or students) identified as having made outstanding contributions to the College of Medicine in basic biomedical science research.

Criteria:
- A continuous record of long-term research
- Significance, volume and quality of research
- Research or scholarly work that brings recognition to the college
- National or international stature of the candidate's creative activity: critically reviewed papers, presentations, books, monographs, invited presentations, awards or honors
- Competitive for grants at the national and/or international level
Presented annually to one basic science and one clinical faculty member who has shown extraordinary commitment to teaching and the promotion of educational excellence. The award continually acknowledges the importance of excellence in teaching in the overall mission of the College of Medicine.

- Dedication to quality teaching
- Positive role model for learners (undergraduate, graduate, professional or residents/fellows)
- Quality of teaching and mentoring
- Enthusiasm for teaching
- Pursuit of excellence in educational scholarly activity
- Leadership in educational programming
Recognizes educators who have dedicated their careers to educating the next generation of the biomedical workforce. It’s given annually to one faculty member who has devoted a significant portion of their professional career to excellence in education.
Criteria:
- Dedication to and longevity of teaching
- Positive role model for learners within the College of Medicine (undergraduate, graduate, professional or residents/fellows)
- Quality of teaching and mentoring
- Enthusiasm and passion for teaching
- Pursuit of excellence in educational scholarly activity
- A lifelong pursuit of excellence in education
- Recipient of educational awards (distinguished educator award, alumni teaching award, departmental or university teaching awards)
Description: The dean annually awards a permanent, honorific title on a competitive basis to one faculty member who has a truly exceptional record of accomplishment appropriate to their track. This honor carries a $5,000 honorarium.
Criteria:
- Primary appointment in the College of Medicine at the rank of professor and a minimum of five years of employment at The Ohio State University
- Distinguished achievement in teaching, research and scholarship and/or service, as appropriate to the nominee’s track
- Record of distinction in exhibiting the values of The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center
