We nurture professional development of med-peds learners at every stage. We strive to provide relevant and meaningful clinical experiences, mentorship and educational resources to medical students, residents and fellow faculty members. We are especially proud of the med-peds residents who are integral members of our clinical team. Our residency program produces highly skilled and compassionate professionals who are well equipped to practice in combined, general, or subspecialty fields.
Med-Peds Education
The goal of the Med-Peds Interest Group is to help medical students learn more about the Med-Peds program, which includes 4 years of training in two specialties (pediatrics and internal medicine). All students are welcome. Throughout the year, panels with Med-Peds faculty answer questions and provide advice to students. The group also helps coordinate shadowing opportunities for interested students.
Advanced Management in Relationship-Centered Care is a longitudinal course for fourth-year medical students that emphasizes team-based care of patients with complex or chronic diseases. Our providers serve as preceptors to these fourth year medical students. We are honored to have the opportunity to share the knowledge and clinical skills that will help guide the careers of future physicians.
This elective during 4th year of medical school is designed to emphasize and foster excellence in students who aspire to the highest standards as physicians entering the field of Internal Medicine or Internal Medicine and Pediatrics. The curriculum fosters independent study and exploration of the Internist as Leader, Master Diagnostician, Evidence-based Clinician, Health System Scientist, and Teacher. Students follow a 9-month, longitudinal curriculum through independent study, narratives, project work, and mentorship by faculty. For interested students, there is a med-peds-specific project on transition implementation in primary care. The goal is identification of patients in need of comprehensive transition plans, systematization of registries, and creation of workflows for administering and tracking transition plans. Students will present their project as part of a Grand Rounds or other departmental meeting.
Our primary care section members intermittently host informal get-togethers with the med-peds residents. The purpose is to foster increased dialogue, collaboration and mentorship between med-peds primary care faculty and those residents who are considering a career in primary care.
Our Med-Peds physicians are strong supporters of the nationally recognized Med-Peds residency program affiliated with Nationwide Children’s Hospital and OSU Wexner Medical Center. One of the most enjoyable experiences for our attendings is the chance to participate in the IM-PECS program (Internal Medicine & Pediatric Experience in a Community Setting). Through this program, second year residents are matched with a community attending and work alongside them in the ambulatory setting a few times a month for their final 3 years of residency training. They also have a concentrated month-long IM-PECS rotation. Not only is this an excellent learning experience about real-world academic primary care for the residents, but it keeps our attendings sharp and engaged with the next generation of Med-Peds physicians. These experiences form a natural preceptor/mentor relationship and the friendships that emerge often last well beyond residency. We have been proud to welcome a large number of past IM-PECS residents into our ranks as they’ve completed their training, then go on to mentor their own Med-Peds residents through this program over time.
