Hudson_Lori_720x720February 2021 Staff Spotlight, Lori Hudson

Where are you from originally and what led you to Ohio State?

I am from Wintersville, Ohio. I received my bachelor’s degree from Mount Union College and wanted to work in a lab. Ohio State was my first job offer.

What lab do you work in and what type of research to do facilitate?

Popovich/McTigue lab; I manage our brain and spinal cord injury lab.

What do enjoy doing in your free time, outside of work?

Hiking, yoga, reading, hanging out with my family and singing.

What drew you to the field and the role you play in the Department of Neuroscience?

I have worked in two other labs. The PI I was working for was leaving and asked where I would like to work. I said that I wanted to work for Dana and Phil because their lab seemed happy. Honestly, I didn’t even know their names. And the rest is history!

Who is your biggest role model and why?

My grandpa Don George because of his ability to treat everyone equally.

What is your favorite movie, book, or band/singer/songwriter and why?

So many books: Little Women, Just Mercy, 1776. Singers: Sting, Adele, and lately Harry Styles (my daughter loves him).

What is the most rewarding part of your job?

Watching students grow and being able to continue to learn new skills.

Do you have any insights or advice to those who are just starting out or are interested in Neuroscience research?

Be open to other’s thoughts and ideas. Don’t be stuck on doing things on your own. You learn more by working with others.

What are some hidden talents of yours?

Not sure if this is a secret, but I could have been a professional organizer! I love it! I am the fastest gel loader around!

What else should we know about you?

I love my job and I love my “outside” life. Keeping both in balance is a priority.
