The Ohio State University, Division of Rehabilitation Psychology in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation offers a 2-year post-doctoral fellowship with a clinical and research focus. Rehabilitation Psychology is a specialty area of psychology that serves individuals disabled by catastrophic injury, illness and disabling chronic medical conditions. Rehabilitation psychologists utilize assessment of cognitive, affective and personality variables in assisting individuals and their family to cope with disability, focusing on both strengths and weaknesses. The goal of our fellowship is to provide excellence in training for post-doctoral residents to achieve competencies in the practice of rehabilitation psychology in order to be eligible for board certification.

The fellowship experience seeks to provide trainees with cognitive, behavioral and emotional assessment skills; training in the writing of a psychological consults; experience in the role of a rehabilitation psychologist as part of an interdisciplinary treatment team; psychological knowledge of adjustment to disability issues in individuals and their families following onset of disabling medical conditions including traumatic brain injury, stroke and spinal cord injury; and training in the use of behavioral management techniques. Our residents are trained in the use of educational interventions, psychotherapy, cognitive remediation and motivational interviewing to improve the lives on our patients. Our residents also facilitate interdisciplinary rehabilitation team function, consult with health care professionals, and advocate for patient rights and accessibility. In addition, the fellowship program places an emphasis on increasing awareness and sensitivity to cultural and diversity issues related to adjustment to disability, treatment intervention and discharge planning.
