Notably from 2016 to 2023, the abdominal transplant program (kidney, liver, pancreas) grew in volume by 96%, while the cardiothoracic transplant program (heart and lung) grew in volume by 63%. To date, Ohio State’s CTC consistently ranks among the top 20 transplant centers by volume in the United States with excellent outcomes. Several in-house teams have contributed to this rapid growth, including our Organ Recovery Team, Histocompatibility Lab and Human Tissue Biorepository. In addition, our Organ Assessment and Repair Center, established in 2015, utilizes advanced medical technology called ex vivo organ perfusion to rehabilitate and repair damage to some donor kidneys, livers, hearts and lungs. Our latest trial, OrganOx liver perfusion, celebrated its one-year anniversary in September with remarkable results — a 25% increase in the number of livers transplanted at Ohio State — further proving organ perfusion is vital to expanding the donor organ pool.
