IHSC environment transformed to illustrate science as art

Thoughtful planning went into the extensive renovation and expansion of The Ohio State University College of Medicine’s Hamilton Hall. It has been transformed into a 225,000-square foot facility now named the Interdisciplinary Health Sciences Center (IHSC). The innovative design infuses art, nature, history and creative illustrations of bacteria and viruses into the medical and health sciences education and technology spaces.
Throughout the building halls and floors, medical illustrations and colorful sketches detail the anatomy of the human body and some of the major skeletal structures. They complement anatomical diagrams that are in the textbooks students use to study the human body in the state-of-the-art anatomy laboratory. They also inspire young learners to become medical illustrators – a profession that plays a very important role in education. Professional medical illustrators can earn the designation Certified Medical Illustrator (CMI).
Future installations of medical images in watercolors, a sound wave of the Ohio State University Alma Mater and images of medicinal flowers are planned. In the meantime, enjoy a tour through the creative environment where team science happens, in what many now refer to as the College of Medicine’s “home base.”
