The Ohio State University College of Medicine and The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center is one of nearly 300 health care institutions nationwide now part of The American Orthopaedic Association’s Own the Bone Program. The initiative offers resources to better identify, evaluate and treat patients who have an osteoporosis- or low bone density-related fracture. The system-based, multidisciplinary program provides resources and tools to:

  1. Use a patient registry to identify, evaluate and coordinate bone health management for patients at risk of complications from orthopedic surgery.
  2. Access 10 preventive measures to help reduce the risk of secondary fragility fractures that providers can use to ensure patients receive comprehensive care.
  3. Assist with establishing bone health or fracture liaison services (FLS) to effectively evaluate and treat patients and close the osteoporosis care gap.
  4. Expand various preventive measures already in place, including guidance on nutrition, physical activity and lifestyle changes, and recommendations for pharmacotherapy and, when suitable, bone mineral density testing.
  5. Assist physicians in delivering effective communication of patient risk factors and recommendations through referrals and patient-focused, educational letters.
