Welcome to the Primary Care Research Fellowship Program

Fellows in the Primary Care Research Fellowship Program in the Division of General Internal Medicine at the College of Medicine undergo training for academic careers that emphasize research and scholarship.

During this two-year program – with an option for a third year – you’ll obtain the knowledge and skills needed to develop a research program, participate in hands-on community research projects, present your work at regional and national conferences and publish your research in peer-reviewed journals. You can also earn an optional master’s degree in public health or a related field.

Guidance, support and mentorship are fostered during weekly works-in-progress seminars, monthly mentoring meetings and formal research performance evaluations.

Fellow testimonials

Meaghan Costello

Meaghan Costello, MD

The fellowship has provided me with structured learning opportunities through my MPH classes and didactic courses as a CATALYST clinical scholar. It has challenged me to shift from a purely clinical framework to a health services researcher framework – now using my clinical experience to guide my approach to population health and health systems optimization. This experience, combined with personalized feedback, has allowed me to evolve rapidly within my first year of fellowship. I feel confident that I will be able to successfully navigate a clinician-researcher career by the end of fellowship, with their ongoing support.

Rachel Gordon

Rachel Gordon, MD

This fellowship gave me the opportunity to explore a variety of methodologies, understand pragmatic research design and establish interdisciplinary mentorships. I gained experience in secondary data analysis, economic analysis, qualitative analysis, systematic review and meta-analysis, implementation science and grant writing. Monthly meetings ensured I was progressing towards my goals and helped me troubleshoot common pitfalls for early career investigators. With their support, I proudly transitioned to tenure-track faculty at Ohio State and was able to submit a K23 application within one year of starting my faculty position.
