Curriculum for Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Residency Program

Training Tracks

Ohio State’s Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) residency program offers both four-year categorical and three-year advanced training tracks. Candidates are selected using the National Residency Matching Program (NRMP). There are seven positions available for each incoming class.

Those entering at a post-graduate year (PGY)-1 level will be assigned to the Preliminary Medicine Program at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center. All PGY-1 residents are welcome to attend department activities, as their schedule allows. An additional month of PM&R may be available at the discretion of preliminary medicine program coordinators.

The three years of PM&R specialty training are spent under the direct supervision of Ohio State’s Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, including rotations at affiliated institutions.

Each resident’s training typically includes:

• 16 months in the inpatient rehabilitation setting
• 14 months of outpatient care
• 6 months of consultative experiences
• 6 months or more of neuromuscular care and electrodiagnostic medicine (EMG). The EMG experience is incorporated into all years of training in consult, inpatient and outpatient care

Conferences and Didactic Curriculum

Our academic curriculum includes a variety of lectures and conferences including faculty-led grand rounds, case conferences, journal clubs, our newly developed musculoskeletal ultrasound program and our core curriculum.

Our core curriculum rotates annually and includes these courses:

• Neurorehabilitation
• General rehabilitation
• Pain and disability
• Pediatric rehabilitation
• Prosthetics and orthotics
• Neuromuscular medicine and electrodiagnostics
• Musculoskeletal medicine and ultrasound technology

Research

Residents are required to develop a research project during their three years at Ohio State. In consultation with a faculty advisor, each resident should prepare a poster or paper to present at a national meeting.

Resident Call

All call is taken from home. Occasional evaluation in the hospital may be required. At Dodd Rehabilitation Hospital’s inpatient facility, call averages one night per week and one weekend per month during inpatient rotations. Nationwide Children’s Hospital call alternates between residents on pediatric rotations and consultation rotations.

Clinical Rotations

All clinical rotations occur in two-month blocks. Residents will rotate through multiple hospitals in the Columbus area throughout their three years.

Resident Evaluations

• 360 evaluations are completed after each inpatient rotation along with attending evaluations which are completed after every inpatient and outpatient rotation.
• Semi-Annually the residents progress is evaluated by the Clinical Competency Committee (CCC), followed by a review with the program director.
• Didactic testing is completed at the end of every didactic course.
