Dr. Virk with a patientThe Depression Recovery Center (DRC) at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center has been at the forefront of pioneering new diagnostic methods, therapies and technology for treating mood disorders. Advanced treatments developed in our nationally recognized neuroscience research labs in Columbus, Ohio, provide innovative, effective therapies for all forms of depression, including treatment-resistant depression.

Our research-driven innovations are shaping the future of mental health care. We’re developing tools to better predict treatment response, identify new brain targets for treatment and uncover hidden neurometabolic contributors to depression. Every discovery brings us closer to our mission of delivering rapid, lasting recovery for anyone experiencing depression.

Our faculty members have diverse expertise in psychology, neuroscience, internal medicine, pharmacology and neuromodulation technologies. Together, they’re transforming depression care and developing the next generation of treatments to promote rapid, effective and lasting recovery.

Innovations in depression research

Our team is actively exploring innovative ways to enhance treatment effectiveness. Current research projects and clinical trials aim to:

Dr. Fournier speaking
  • Bring rapid, real-time assessments of brain circuit function into our outpatient clinics to guide treatment recommendations.
  • Identify alternative brain circuit targets for our neuromodulation treatments. While targeting known circuits is effective for most people, it doesn’t work for everyone. These projects seek new targets to help more people achieve recovery.
  • Refine treatment selection tools to better predict who will respond to which treatments. DRC projects use advanced machine learning technology to enhance our assessment strategies, allowing us to personalize treatment approaches and achieve longer-lasting symptom relief, faster.
  • Identify and treat people with neurometabolic disorders that affect the brain’s ability to produce essential mood-regulating chemicals. People with this type of depression often respond poorly to standard treatments and are difficult to diagnose because no simple blood tests diagnose the issue. We’re partnering with specialists in radiology and genetics to implement tools to identify these problems when they are present. An accurate diagnosis can lead to life-changing treatments for individuals with these conditions.
