Brad Rovin, MD, has been appointed chair of the Lupus Foundation of America’s Medical-Scientific Advisory Council, which combines thought leaders from multiple medical specialty areas related to lupus, including adult and pediatric rheumatology, nephrology, dermatology and epidemiology. Rovin will lead the council’s structure and strategy, provide recommendations on membership and help drive scientific priorities.
Having held key leadership roles in the American Society of Nephrology, Rovin is also deputy editor of Kidney International and co-chairs guideline development for the nonprofit Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcomes. As a nephrologist, he specializes in autoimmune kidney disease, focusing on how the immune system interacts with the kidneys and causes renal inflammation and injury. His work in patient care and research seeks to improve how care is provided, by:
- Providing the most innovative care to patients with difficult and complex diseases mediated by the immune system by combining care with kidney pathology and experimental therapeutics.
- Applying learned knowledge of pathology and various ways the immune system can attack the kidneys in order to improve understanding and treatment.
- Enhancing trainees’ understanding of diagnosis and treatment of various glomerular diseases through The Ohio State University College of Medicine Glomerular Disease Fellowship.
- Aligning programs to complement the College of Medicine Nephrology Fellowship, including proficiency in diagnosing and managing lupus nephritis, IgA nephropathy, membranous nephropathy and ANCA glomerulonephritis, and exposure to rare glomerular diseases like Fabry disease or fibrillary glomerulonephritis.
