MSTP T32 grant renewal supports five years of medical and scientific training for 20 predoctoral students

Strong institutional infrastructure, mentors and training outcomes that reflect the work of faculty members, students, staff members and leadership in The Ohio State University College of Medicine’s Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP) led to the renewal of the MSTP T32 grant with the first submission of the renewal request. This success speaks to the ongoing innovation and dedication that is inherent in the college’s dual degree MD/PhD programs which train the next generation of physician-scientists.

A total of $5,616,400, allocated over five years, will fund stipends and tuition for 20 Doctor of Medicine and Doctor of Philosophy students through extensive scientific and clinical medicine training here at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center.   The majority of MSTP students require eight years to complete this dual degree training that becomes the foundation for a physician-scientist career.

The grant will also provide funds to support special programming at the Ohio State Wexner Medical Center and to support trainees’ participation in national and international scientific conferences, where they’ll share the results of their research discoveries. The MSTP T32 grant program is designed to ensure:

• Successful completion of medical school curriculum and all the associated testing to advance learning and training.
• Successful completion of all coursework and training necessary for a PhD degree, including original research leading to a first author, peer-reviewed publication, as well as passing of the Candidacy Exam and the Dissertation Defense.
• Physician-scientist career development through MSTP-specific programming, activities and courses, including the MSTP Seminar, MSTP Clinical Preceptorship Program and the MSTP Well-Being Program.
• Impactful research training by high-quality mentors with successful research funding and training track records, who support trainees’ curiosity, creativity, research productivity and preparedness for a successful physician-scientist career.
