The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center Department of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery has long taken pride in its exceptional training programs and the success of its graduates. The residency program has ranked among the top five nationally by Doximity for four consecutive years, achieving a #4 ranking this year—reflecting national recognition of its educational strength, clinical rigor, and culture of mentorship.
In summer 2025, the department advanced its commitment to educational excellence by establishing the Resident and Fellow Endowment Fund, a dedicated resource designed to enhance training experiences across all levels of graduate medical education. With a programmatic budget of approximately $180,000, the fund will support wellness initiatives, participation in national conferences, dissection and simulation courses, visiting professorships, leadership development opportunities, and other activities essential to preparing future leaders in the field.
The long-term goal is to build a stable, perpetual source of support. By targeting a 4–5% return on a fully funded endowment, the department aims to protect and sustain educational enrichment even during periods of fiscal constraint or external pressures.
“This fund will help support new educational initiatives, including simulation training, dissection courses and leadership retreats, providing enhanced opportunities for our resident physicians to build skills in all areas of medicine,” says Brad DeSilva, MD, residency program director, laryngology fellowship director, and vice chair for education.
The department invites supporters to contribute to the establishment of this endowment. Every gift—regardless of size—directly supports the Resident and Fellow Endowment Fund and helps ensure that the next generation of otolaryngologists receives world-class training.
“As Chair of the Department of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery, I cannot overstate how essential philanthropic partnership is to our mission” states Dr. Rocco. “The creation of the Resident and Fellow Endowment Fund marks a pivotal step in securing the future of our educational programs, and it is made possible only through the generosity of our alumni, faculty, and friends. Their support strengthens every dimension of our training environment—from expanding cutting-edge simulation and surgical experiences to enabling meaningful national engagement for our residents and fellows. We are deeply grateful for this community of supporters, whose commitment ensures that our learners continue to thrive and that our department remains among the premier otolaryngology training programs in the nation.’
