Welcome to Graduate Medical Education (GME) Mental Health Services at The Ohio State University College of Medicine.
The mission of the GME Mental Health Services program is to deliver highly accessible and confidential mental health services and psychoeducation to trainees. Our goal is to help trainees address their mental health and professional concerns while training to become medical professionals.
Counseling and Support
Med Talk is a 15-minute non-clinical informal and confidential support session with the GME counselor. The GME counselor will be available Monday—Thursday 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM in-person to provide support. Residents and fellows do not need to schedule an appointment to utilize this service as it is available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Med Talk is not a substitute for clinical counseling.
Here are some reasons why individuals might use Med Talk:
- Trainees that have never been to counseling and want to learn about psychotherapy.
- Trainees who need support with a specific issue.
- Trainees who do not need on-going clinical care.
- Trainees who are searching for mental health and wellbeing resources.
Clinical Consultation
A clinical consultation is a 30-minute appointment to listen to the trainee’s concerns and determine the type of services they are seeking or provide resources. The trainee and the counselor will collaborate to determine the appropriate level of care and support services available based on the presenting concern.Initial Appointment
The initial appointment is a 60-minute clinical interview with the counselor to begin ongoing individual therapy.Individual Therapy
Individual therapy is a one-on-one 50 to 55-minute treatment session with the counselor about the client’s goals based on the presenting concerns discussed during the initial assessment. To schedule an appointment, login to MedHub and click on the GME Mental Health Services button.
Department of Chaplaincy and Clinical Pastoral Care
Chaplains assist patients, families and medical center physicians and staff in meeting spiritual and emotional needs. Sanctuary and meditation rooms are located throughout the hospital. A chaplain is on call 24 hours per day and can be reached through the hospital operator.
Employee Assistance Program (EAP)
The EAP program provides brief counseling services (up to 5 free sessions) and links employees to long term counseling within the insurance network as needed. They also provide so many other services (financial counseling, counseling for your family and many other resources).
Stress, Trauma and Resilience (STAR) Program
The STAR program provides support for health care workers after traumatic work experiences (such as deaths of close patients, unexpected patient outcomes, medical errors, workplace trauma, etc.).
