About the Advocacy Subcommittee
The Advocacy Subcommittee focuses on issues pertaining to equity and on solutions for achieving promotion, supporting career advancement, and retaining academic faculty talent. Faculty in academic medicine face challenges in balancing academic research, education and teaching, and clinical duties, and Advocacy’s mission is to advocate for change and to foster a collaborative and supportive environment for all faculty, particularly for women and underrepresented minority faculty.
Recent initiatives by the Advocacy Subcommittee:
- Examining search committees and identifying best practice recommendations to insure an equitable and transparent search process, to garner a diverse candidate pool, and to assemble diverse faculty to serve on search committees.
- Securing new lactation space for research scientist moms in the BRT.
- Identifying best practices for mentorship and sponsorship of junior faculty and creating opportunities for women to attain leadership roles and enhance their academic profile.
- Examining the associate-to-full professor pathway and identifying persistent barriers to promotion. Faculty retention is paramount to avoid the “leaky pipeline” of faculty departures and to facilitate career development to attain senior academic rank and leadership opportunities.
- Facilitating building a national reputation at all ranks, with measures that Faculty Affairs, Chairs, and individual faculty can undertake to enhance one’s national profile. Based on the Advocacy’s COM mid-career faculty survey data (2019), difficulty in developing a national reputation is consistently cited as the most significant barrier to meeting metrics for promotion.
- Interview with AAMC GWIMS about resources related to sexual harassment and structure of reporting at The Ohio State University: spring 2021- WIMS, specifically advocacy sub-committee and Dr. Leon McDougle (Chief Diversity Officer) were invited to participate. Report is to be released by the AAMC GWIMS group in 2022

About the Data Subcommittee
The Data Subcommittee carries out the important role of collecting and analyzing data to direct and support WIMS. These data help to identify and actively reduce barriers to the professional success of women in medicine and science, focusing on equity and parity, promotion and leadership and foster a positive culture and environment that supports the goals of all faculty in medicine and science. Our Data Initiatives provide the evidence that identifies gaps and procedures towards improving these gaps, as well as celebrating successes of the COM. Importantly, data provides more transparency and the opportunity for information sharing that empowers both the current and next generation of biomedical clinicians and scientists.
Current Data Subcommittee Initiatives aligned with the WIMS Strategic Plan
- Build, validate and curate longitudinal databases of OSU COM leadership positions (Deans, Chairs, Division Chiefs, Center and Medical Directors) and faculty by rank, track, and department.
- Assemble results for COM leaders and department chairs on behalf of WIMS.
- Provide robust data analyses to benchmark with COMs in medical colleges nationwide.
- IRB and secure storage of DSC databases.
- Provide deliverables regarding gender parity for OSU presentations and publications, for presentation at national conferences, and for publication in the national scientific and medical literature.
- Collaboration with OSU Anti-racist Action Plan (ARAP) initiatives to facilitate the incorporation of URM and ethnicity as well as gender in the COM databases.
Additional ongoing DSC projects included:
- Assemble an annual database for faculty retention by rank and gender.
- Track faculty promotion and tenure and faculty hiring at senior ranks.
- Work jointly with the COM Office of Research on gender pay analysis.
