Doximity, the largest networking community for health care professionals in the country, conducts a national poll of board-certified physicians each year to assess the quality of accredited residency programs. This year, five residency programs at The Ohio State University College of Medicine and The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center are listed among the top 10 programs, and four additional programs have been recognized among the top 20 programs nationwide, based on physician reputation.

The top 20 programs include:

Carol R. Bradford, MD, MS, FACS, dean of the Ohio State College of Medicine and vice president for Health Sciences at the Ohio State Wexner Medical Center, explains that Doximity’s Residency Navigator poll offers a tool that enables learners to evaluate thousands of programs across 28 specialties. It’s estimated that 90% of graduating medical students use Doximity to research residency program options, and many report that it helps them make informed residency decisions. For many, it leads them to Ohio State, whose programs are built on collaboration, innovative research and an unwavering commitment to patient-centered care.

“Matching into a residency program is a pivotal milestone in every physician’s journey, shaping not only their clinical expertise but also their identity as compassionate healers and scientific innovators,” Dr. Bradford says. “We are proud to be recognized nationally for the excellence of our programs, where residents learn alongside some of the most dedicated clinicians, scientists and educators in the country.”

Ohio State’s acclaimed residency programs help physician residents develop significant expertise in a specialty and let them continue to hone their medical skills, advance patient care and forge relationships that often shape the trajectory of their careers. They get hands-on experience at some of the nation’s best hospitals and research centers, including Nationwide Children’s Hospital, which was named by U.S. News & World Report as tied for the no. 1 pediatric hospital in Ohio and the Midwest, and The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center – Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute, the nation’s third-largest cancer hospital.

C. Alexander Grieco, MD, interim vice dean for Education and associate clinical professor of Biomedical Education and Anatomy and Radiology in the College of Medicine, says physician residents thrive in our residency programs because we equip them to work in evolving and complex systems of care.

“Our residents are empowered to grow in an environment that challenges them to think critically and care deeply as they take their next steps in shaping the future of medicine,” Dr. Grieco says. “This supports their ability to focus on uncovering novel discoveries and improving patient outcomes.”

Scott Holliday, MD, associate dean for Graduate Medical Education in the College of Medicine, acknowledges the innovative efforts of program directors and coordinators to evolve and redesign education programs to ensure the physician residents' success. He emphasizes the importance of creating a learning environment that fosters innovation, compassionate care and empathetic communication.

"We are dedicated to ensuring our overall learning environment supports these values," he says. "One way we achieve this is by implementing innovative mindfulness programs designed to alleviate burnout and mental fatigue among providers."

At Ohio State, learners and trainees receive dedicated support, mentorship and innovative programming that guides their pursuit of academic and personal development, empowering them to become successful members of the medical community and make measurable differences in transforming the health of our communities.
