The College of Medicine provides a robust suite of internal funding mechanisms designed to support investigators at every stage of the research and commercialization life cycle. To sustain existing projects and cultivate new discoveries, the college offers five primary opportunities:
- The Dean’s Strategic Gap Funding, which provides short-term financial stability to faculty with favorably reviewed but currently unfunded federal proposals;
- The Dean’s Discovery Grants Program, which seeds innovative foundational research;
- The NCH and Research Institute/COM Cross-Campus Collaborative Pilot Program, which drives interdisciplinary synergy across institutional boundaries; and
- The Research Innovation Seed for Commercialization (RISC) Fund, which acts as an early-stage grant mechanism specifically intended to advance discoveries along the commercial pathway toward marketable outcomes.
Additionally, promising early-career clinician-scientists can apply for the Research Innovation Career Development Award (RICDA), a specialized grant administered by the Office of Physician Scientist Education and Training that provides critical research protected time and financial support to maintain scientific momentum.

The OSUCCC – James IRP drives oncology innovation by providing targeted internal funding to help investigators test bold hypotheses and gather the critical preliminary data needed to secure external federal grants. The program supports diverse scientific needs through several dedicated tracks, including:
- Idea grants
- Early-career awards
- Community-based partnership awards
- Clinical trial grants and protocol-specific research support
- Specialized initiatives:
- BRIDGE Program Awards (Building Research, Innovation, and Care Delivery for Groups with Early-Onset Cancers) to study tumor biology in younger populations
- Pelotonia Scholars Program to train promising student researchers under expert faculty mentorship.

The CTSI provides internal funding mechanisms tailored to accelerate medical discoveries from the lab bench to the patient bedside. Investigators can advance their research through several targeted tracks, including:

- The Clinical and Translational Science Pilot Program (CTSP) for novel pilot ideas

External Funding
Grant Management Office
The College of Medicine Grants Management Office (GMO) provides research administrative services to PIs with externally funded research projects throughout the entire grant life cycle.
The GMO helps researchers develop proposals and budgets, prepare application packages for review and submission, provide support with annual progress reports, financial planning and management, project closeout and more. The GMO also monitors all NIH updates to ensure compliance.
