DHLRI Pre-Doctoral Student of the Year Award
We are not currently accepting applications for the DHLRI Pre-Doctoral Student of the Year Award. Applications will open in June 2026.
The DHLRI Pre-Doctoral Student of the Year award is an annual competition to identify the “DHLRI Graduate Student of the Year”. 3 Graduate Students (from all applications) will be invited to present their research in RIP (15 min talk+5 min Q&A) on September 11, 2026.
The winner will receive the Graduate Student of the Year Award and all 3 presenters will receive travel awards ($500, $300 and $200) per their scoring.
The winner will also serve on the DHLRI Education Committee for 1 year.
Applicants
Graduate Student with DHLRI faculty member as their primary mentor.
Ideal Candidates
Post-candidacy PhD and MD/PhD students with exceptional scholarly and research activities evident from:
- cGPA
- Pre-Doctoral grants submitted to cover expenses for stipend, tuition, research or travel
- Workshops and Conferences attended
- Quality of paper drafts written and submitted
Application Documentation Required
Abstract of Current Research
- Arial 11-point font
- Limited to 2000 characters and 2-4 panels (spacing does not count as characters)
NIH Style Biosketch
Personal statement (limited to 650 words, approximately 1 page) Should reflect:
- Research motivation
- Grants submitted (National and Institutional) to secure funds for research, tuition, or travel
- Additional courses and workshops attended and presentations to develop research, teaching, and grant writing abilities
- Service and outreach activities like judging High-School or undergraduate
Mentor Letter (Arial 11-point font, limited to 650 words) Should reflect:
- Candidate work-ethics and independence in the laboratory research, ability to troubleshoot, motivation to learn scientific techniques, and paper and grant writing skills
- Innovativeness and independence in designing experiments
- Training others in the lab
- Quality of first-drafts of papers written

The DHLRI Post-Doctoral Student of the Year award is an annual competition during Post Doctoral Appreciation Week. 3 Post-docs (from all applications) will be invited to present their research in RIP (15 min talk+5 min Q&A) on Friday, September 18, 2026.
The winner will receive the Post-Doc of the Year Award and all 3 presenters will receive travel awards ($500, $300 and $200) per their scoring.
The winner will also serve on the DHLRI Education Committee for 1 year.
Applicants
Post-doctoral fellows with DHLRI faculty member as their primary mentor.
Ideal Candidates
PhDs, MDs and/or MD/PhDs within 4 years of post-doctoral training, motivated to develop an academic research career
Previous Finalists
Winners from previous years cannot apply. Finalists are eligible to apply in subsequent years if a different research project is being presented.

DHLRI Research Cores Award Seed Grant
We are now accepting applications for the next round of DHLRI Research Core Awards. Applications (PDF application + Budget) are due by Friday, May 8, 2026 at 11:59pm to Holly.Sucharski@osumc.edu. To promote the development of new grant applications, DHLRI is excited to offer Research Core Awards for DHLRI members, for use exclusively in one of the below DHLRI managed Cores:
- Large Animal Cath Core
- Comprehensive Small Animal Surgery Core
- Cardiovascular Imaging Research Core
- Small Animal Imaging Core
- Flow Core
- Metabolism Core
Key Details
- Each awardee may receive only one DHLRI - RCA per fiscal year, with a minimum award of $500 and a maximum of $3,000. Funding may be requested from multiple core services for a single project.
- A budget must be included, listing the anticipated core services to be requested, along with their costs, using the Core Service Fees listed on the DHLRI website.
- All services must be completed within one year of the award, with no carry-over of funds permitted.
- Funding decisions are announced in February, May, August, and November, as funds are available.
- It is expected that within 1 year of the award, an extramural grant application will be submitted with the relevant DHLRI Core(s) to be included as a line-item on the grant budget, as appropriate. It is also expected that resulting publications will include acknowledgement of the relevant DHLRI Core(s), using the following language: "The authors acknowledge research support from the Dorothy M. Davis Heart and Lung Research Institute 'Core'".
- The DHLRI Shared Resources Committee will have initial review of RCA applications with the DHLRI Director and Administrative Director making final determinations.
- Funds cannot be used for services already rendered prior to the time of application.
- Awardees must be in good standing with DHLRI, considering research collaboration, fiscal, space, and safety factors.
- All project work must be completed within the United States.
Scope of Project
- Applications are intended to support preliminary studies that will lead to a new grant application, a major scientific initiative, or provide critical support for an existing cardio / pulmonary health project. The award is not intended to support research for which extramural, or startup funds are already available.
Application Process
- Applications are reviewed until designated funds for the current fiscal year are exhausted.
- To apply, complete the provided fillable PDF application in full; incomplete applications will be rejected. A budget of anticipated costs is also required.
- Eligible applicants: Research and Tenure-Track Faculty, or Senior Research Staff of any rank who are DHLRI members in good standing.
- Applicants are responsible for securing appropriate institutional approvals for research protocols before completion of work.
Payment Process
- Applicants will email Dr. Holly Sucharski-Argall with the date of service and anticipate costs. Dr. Sucharski-Argall will provide DHLRI worktags and payment will be coordinated through DHLRI Fiscal Officer, DeeAnn Willis-Berry.
