More about abstracts
Pick a case. Abstracts will be judged by their clinical relevance, educational value, literature discussion, and writing quality. Not all submissions need to be truly new cases. They can have
a fresh spin on a classic case or add a new element. A known disease presenting in a confusing way can be an excellent teaching case. A new treatment for a known disorder with unusual clinical factors could be an excellent case.
Pick a faculty mentor. All medical students should have a faculty mentor. Residents may benefit from faculty mentoring as well.
Write the abstract. Abstracts must be limited to 450 words. Tips below.
- Author: include your name, your advisors’ names, and any additional authors
- Introduction: Most abstracts start with an introduction that explains the background and clinical relevance for the case.
- Case Presentation: Describe the history, physical examination, test results, the patient progress, and outcome.
- Discussion: In the discussion, review the conclusions of the patient’s case and expound upon the teaching lessons for the case.
- Conclusion: In the conclusion, highlight the key take-away points from the case. This can be done in a short paragraph or bullet points.
