This year, five residency programs at The Ohio State University College of Medicine and The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center are considered top 10 programs and three additional programs have been recognized among the top 20 programs nationwide, based on physician reputation.

The top 20 programs include:

Carol R. Bradford, MD, MS, FACS, dean of the Ohio State College of Medicine and vice president for Health Sciences at the Ohio State Wexner Medical Center, explains that Doximity’s Residency Navigator poll is a tool that enables learners to evaluate thousands of programs across 28 specialties. An estimated 90% of graduating medical students use Doximity to research their options for residency training programs and aid in their decision-making process.

“Medical residency programs are typically the first step in a new physician’s post-graduate journey,” Dr. Bradford says. “At Ohio State, we offer some of the absolute best residency programs that allow our learners to develop significant expertise in a specialty. By working closely with our world-class clinical faculty, residents continue to hone their medical skills, advance patient care and forge relationships that often shape the trajectory of their careers.”

Resident physicians at the Wexner Medical Center get hands-on experience at some of the nation’s best hospitals and research centers, including Nationwide Children’s Hospital, which was ranked the nation’s sixth-best pediatric hospital last year by U.S. News & World Report, and The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center – Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute, the nation’s third-largest cancer hospital.

According to U.S. News, the Wexner Medical Center is nationally ranked as the second-best hospital in Ohio, recognized in eight of 15 nationally ranked adult specialties and recognized as high performing in Diabetes and Endocrinology, Gastroenterology and GI Surgery, Geriatrics and Orthopedics. In addition, the academic medical center rated as high performing in 13 out of 20 common procedures and conditions.

Daniel Clinchot, MD, vice dean for Education at the College of Medicine and professor and chair of Biomedical Education and Anatomy, says residents thrive in our residency programs because of the collaborative environment.

“Residents know from day one that they are supported and part of a diverse team,” Dr. Clinchot says. “And that their efforts will support the academic medical center’s mission of promoting health equity, reducing health disparities and ensuring the best patient outcomes.”

Scott Holliday, MD, associate dean of Graduate Medical Education at the College of Medicine, credits the training opportunities and the diligence of program directors and coordinators to ensure residents have a positive and successful experience as a driving force behind the success. As is focusing on continual improvement to the programs based on resident and faculty feedback.

“We focus intently on making sure our overall learning environment is one that supports innovation and compassionate care,” Dr. Holliday says. “Our program directors, department chairs and other hospital-wide stakeholders support and oversee our colleagues so they can provide the best clinical learning environment possible.”

Through this rich mentorship, dedicated support and innovative programming, residents at the Ohio State College of Medicine and Wexner Medical Center continue to make measurable differences in transforming the health of our communities.
