
At the forefront of AI
Supported by university-wide collaboration, a new AI service core at the College of Medicine aims to accelerate breakthrough discoveries.
As a surgeon-scientist, I’ve always been drawn to moments in medicine when new ideas challenge and ultimately evolve long-standing practice. It's fascinating how tools and practices we take for granted, like anesthesia or even handwashing, were once met with hesitation. But over time, guided by evidence and experience, those changes reshapedcare and saved countless lives.
We are living in another one of those moments today. Across medicine, new tools and practices are emerging quickly, raising important questions about how we adapt and lead while also staying grounded in our purpose. At The Ohio State University College of Medicine and Wexner Medical Center, I’m honored to serve as the interim dean of a community that’s willing to engage with change so intentionally, asking how innovation can responsibly serve patients, learners and society.
That mindset is shaping our approach to artificial intelligence. We don’t see AI as a replacement for clinical judgment, we see it as a tool to support discovery, expand education and strengthen patient care. Embracing AI doesn’t mean abandoning caution — it means staying engaged, helping shape how these tools are developed and used and ensuring they reflect our values.
In this issue of the Ohio State Medicine Alumni magazine, you’ll see that approach in action. From analyzing large datasets to accelerate drug discovery, to reducing administrative burdens so physicians can spend more time with patients, to uncovering patterns that improve cancer diagnosis and treatment, our teams are exploring how AI can help address real problems in human-centered ways.

This work reflects who we are as Buckeyes: We are innovators and collaborators who understand that technology is most powerful when it's paired with human empathy and expertise. AI doesn't replace the art of medicine; it challenges us to reimagine how that art is taught and practiced.

These faculty and staff members were chosen for the impact they're making across the college:
Dana McTigue '95 PhD, has been named vice dean for Research at the College of Medicine. McTigue most recently served as the college's associate dean for Foundational Research. A nationally recognized neuroscientist, McTigue advanced from postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Physiology and Cell Biology to professor in the Department of Neuroscience. Today, she provides strategic leadership as the director of Research for Ohio State's Belford Center for Spinal Cord Injury and holds the Belford Family Endowed Chair in Spinal Cord Injury.
Her research has fundamentally reshaped how the field understands spinal cord injury, shifting the focus beyond localized trauma to viewing spinal cord injury as a complex, whole-body condition. Her groundbreaking discoveries — including a critical link between spinal cord injuries and chronic liver disease — have opened new doors for long-term treatment. Over the past two decades, McTigue has secured more than $28 million in external research funding. Her national leadership includes service as both a governing council member and as treasurer for the American Society for Neurochemistry.
The Ohio State University College of Medicine is proud to celebrate the incredible achievements of our 2026 graduating class on Match Day. These future physicians have secured residency positions at institutions nationwide, marking a monumental milestone in their medical careers.
Our graduates are taking their talents across the country, with students successfully matching into residency programs spanning 30 different states. While many will remain local to continue their training, a significant number are heading to leading medical centers throughout the nation, including matches in Illinois, Pennsylvania, California and Michigan.
